SIL is upset I did not punish my step daughter for being disrespectful

Good for your daughter! Laughing in your sil’s face is rude but refusing to work for a really low amount of money is going to serve your daughter well in the long run.

This. All of it.

Laughing in someone's face and then walking away while continuing to laugh is absolutely rude. Full stop.

There is no reason for a stepparent to get involved in disciplinary issues with a teen.

OP here. She is my step daughter but I love her as my own. I agree 100% with you. I do not get involved with disciplinary issues. That's her fathers responsibility.

The bold is what you should say to your SIL if she brings it up to you again. Your daughter was right to turn her down(so proud of her) BUT it was VERY rude of her to laugh in her face and walk off.

dp I think it is great she stood up for herself. $10 an hour for four kids is laughable!

A person can stand up for themselves without being a d#**## about it. SIL probably hasn’t gone on a date night in years and didn’t know what the going rate is. That’s not a reason to laugh at her, more especially given that she’s family.

Is your SIL from your side of the family or your dh’s?

I agree. SD needs to learn manners.

Did you think she was rude?

$10/hour for four kids is, indeed, laughable.

Seriously. I can’t believe anyone is defending this. Society is so f’ed up. I feel sorry for my kids growing up today.

Still not appropriate to actually laugh.

I side with your daughter, OP!!!

Teens should be allowed to laugh in the face of exploitative adults.

SD was rude but maybe SIL is an annoying narc who deserves it. I think I’m right considering the insulting offer and the fact that she’s huffing about it still.

I doubt she was laughing in her face. She probably did laugh because $10 for four kids is ridiculous. Your SIL was trying to take advantage of her because she’s family and now she’s enraged that she didn’t get what she wanted.

Good for your daughter!

Wtf, these are not the only options! Is she going to laugh and walk out of job interviews? She can stick to her price without being rude. It’s bad but it’s also stupid as a business move. She should never burn bridges with potential customers. Next week the aunt could have come back at $20/hr, or passed her name to someone who would.

Your SIL sounds nuts.

'Different ideas of the price?" LOL! SIL was rude, $2.50/hour per kid for FOUR kids is a complete insult and she tried to take advantage of a teenager, thinking she'd fold to keep peace in the family. Sorry, but no. She's mad because she's embarrassed, which she should be.
