Could this be the path they were on? At the beginning you can see switchbacks and I can kind of correlate some parts to the map. I believe this was made before the fires. |
I've seen several posts questioning why the couple were even hiking. After watching some of these videos, I want to get out there.
Also for everyone going on about the trail being closed, have no doubt a lot of looky loos are heading out there to poke around. People who have no business being out on that trail are probably trying to get some info. This story is big internationally. |
I believe that is still the trail off of Highway 140 and not the trail involved in this story. |
Agree. I was envisioning not a cut trail, but a very rough barely-there trail with boulders you had to climb over and that sort of thing. This doesn't seem bad at all - although I wouldn't do it in 109degree weather. |
Reading comprehension issues? |
To help with the trail confusion here are some links to Google Maps.
Trailhead for the Hite Cove Trail - this trail is not one of the trails reportedly used by the family: https://goo.gl/maps/Lp8r137NjiaVC3Tj9 Trailhead for the Hites Cove Trail - this trail is one of the two trails, along with the Savage-Lundy Trail, that the family was reportedly on: https://goo.gl/maps/aeCe8wWYMpR7NbzU9 Hope this helps. |
Did anyone else read the article today in the NYTimes? I was about the mystery surrounding the deaths, and odd to me because it did not mention heat/heat exhaustion as a possible cause of death (while mentioning a lot of other possibilities). |
Need to correct my last post. This is a more accurate link to the Hites Cove trailhead. Although not marked on the map if you zoom in on satellite view you can see the trail leave to the left of the dirt road. https://goo.gl/maps/WihNR6RE2SbHc8Xb6 |
So there is no way the family meant to take the easier Hite Cove trail but made a mistake? |
No. If you looked at the links they are miles and miles apart. |
Yes. Because the deaths are obviously not heat-related. But this is DCUM, where we just cannot stop blaming the victims for poor decision-making aka bad parenting. It's what we do. |
It looks more like the trails near Jerseydale. |
So where would their car have been on this map? It was reported that they were found near Devil's Gulch but only 1.5 miles from their car. That doesn't make sense from the map. Their car would have been on the left side of that map. |
This is his description of the flight: "A flight to the Hite Cove area and along the South Fork Merced River, then back up the hill to the Highway 140, Merced River, and Yosemite Cedar Lodge area. Filmed by a DJI Mavic Pro." To me this sounds like the Hite Cove Trail that originates off !40. |
