How did they all die, including the dog, all at once? Gas from a mine? The toxic algae? The heat?

It is a weird, weird story. They were transplants from the Bay Area who left San Francisco at the height of the pandemic to pursue a dream of living in a rural area. They'd only been there a year and had their new baby at the same time. Nine hours later and 1.5 miles from the truck, in an area known as Devil’s Gulch, a search-and-rescue team found Gerrish, Chung, their daughter, Miju, and the dog. They were all dead. Gerrish was in a seated position with the baby and dog beside him, according to the Chronicle. Chung was a little farther up the hill. ![]() |
I mean how can two adults and a baby all die so suddenly that they couldn't hike a mile back to their vehicle? And the dog too?

obviously murder-suicide. |
There were no marks on the bodies and no wounds. They'd just bought a new AirBnB property as well. So exactly how would you suggest this murder-suicide happened? |
No marks on them and toxicology has turned up nothing so far. Very weird. |

They're thinking toxic algae: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/family-found-dead-sierra-national-forest_n_611f4065e4b0c6968106d90a?ncid=APPLENEWS00001 |
I mean, it’s Occam’s Razor. Toxicology reports will shown the husband poisoned the wife with something in the water, then the baby, dog, and himself. |
I’d think that if it were gas, there would be several other dead animals in the area.
Heat I feel would kill everyone at different times, since people have different tolerances. I googled algal blooms and sounds like they are pretty obvious (water changes colors and looks scummy), and no human deaths have ever been attributed to them. So that seems unlikely. |
Sounds like poisoning, either purposeful or accidental. A gas would make sense, you sit down because you're not feeling well and just drift off. A purposeful poisoning would usually have signs (foaming at mouth, blood, vomit, etc)

Maybe...they said Merced River near where they were found had/has toxic algae. Which is something I've honestly never thought to look out for. Not that I hike...at all. ![]() ![]() https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/19/us/yosemite-family-death-trnd/index.html |
There are easier ways to poison a family than to go on a hike and hope the spot of water you pick is toxic. Besides which - poison is mostly a woman's choice of murder/suicide. |
They were also only gone for a day. A friend went out looking for them within 24 hours and found that. That's not enough for heat stroke for all four bodies (especially the dog). |
I mean, put something in the water they were drinking. Toxic algae is far-fetched. A hike in 100 degree heat when you filled the water bottles is way to ensure it. |
