DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

All you have to do is show up with signs every day Maret uses the field. But that would require more than typing on your iPhone to an anonymous forum. Not gonna happen.

People have enough motivation to protest. The problem is that the recipients of protests at Jelleff would be the kids on the field when it is the Maret adults (and DC govt) that should be held accountable.

The parents come pick up their kids. Don't let me get started about how many high and mighty types are there on game days with the other private schools. I am pretty sure this is just a smart phone virtual group and you have no idea about the actual field use.

I testified at the hearing, so I am not vitual-only.

Go ahead, mighty social justice warriors. Bring and bang your pots and pans, and chant we shall overcome. How boring you are.

Jack Evans will be there to give his Ward 2 report from 7:35-7:45pm. Come prepared to ask questions about Jelleff and his recent corruption findings.

Tommy Jones from DPR will be giving an update on the transfer of Ellington Field from 8:05-8:15pm.

Anyone can attend.

I hope someone goes on behalf of the 100 kids without any outdoor space to play.

I’d love to see someone from the Washington Teachers Union announce their they will voluntarily give up their free Hardy on-site parking lot. On behalf of the kids who have no place to play. Of course they would.

The kids with no outdoor play space are at Jelleff after-school, not Hardy. And as been explained here multiple times, the parking is a red herring.

All of the outrage that has generated by this issue could certainly be channeled better by the “Make Jelleff Public” team. Beyond testifying at the hearing, signatories have been asked to do almost nothing and there has been no communications on next steps following the hearing. If they organized a protest, hundreds would turn out. But these things just don’t happen spontaneously.

What happened at the Burleith meeting last night?

If any protesters so much as get within 50 feet of the kids, they should be tased, cuffed and arrested.

Really? Then so is the notion that the poor Hardy students are being denied a place to play. The selfishness of the Hardy staff is appalling.

On what grounds? Is protesting corruption a criminal act now in Maret-land? Any protesters would be well within their legal rights to walk onto the field and stay there. Despite this horrid deal, Jelleff is still public property.

How about the Maret staff give up their parking and build a baseball field on their campus. Or Maret could use their resources to rent, buy or build another field - for their private school.

Seriously, you're attacking public school teachers and low-income student attending Jellef afterschool programs. (and the parking lot at Hardy isn't even the size of a soccer field) Your targets are misguided. Back off.

People just want a way for the community to access a public field in their neighborhoods without it being bought out from underneath them in a backroom deal.

We get Maret wants a field too - they could then go through the normal permitting and allocation processes with all of the other groups vying for use of fields. This was because they were going around the system and using extra $ and back-room methods to buy their way to an exclusive deal.

Harassment and stalking of children is a violation of the law.
