Getting into St. Albans

They don't. That's been the problem the last decade. Maybe after one of the worst football seasons ever, the school will re-evaulate and consider a holistic approach to admissions. There are enough full pay Chinese math wizzes at it is.

I truly hope that you are not a STA parent. It would be quite disheartening to know that such blatant racism exists among the STA parent body.

Blatant racism or fact-based observation?

NP - Every time people mention race it is not racism. It is funny that the same people who talk about "cultural appropriation" and multiculturalism criticize people for mentioning some observation about people and their culture. It is a fact that several private schools in the area have admitted full-pay students from China. At STA, these are some of the few people who are allowed to deviate substantially from the math curriculum by moving ahead of their cohort. If people want their children to be exposed to a variety of people with a variety of interests, they can have an opinion about what proportion of the class should be students here from China. I have a math whiz from MoCo, but I agree.

We have hosted a couple of the Chinese boys in our home for various reasons and they are all nice, normal, friendly boys.

NP: the element of racism isn't in mentioning race. It's in the math whiz stereotype of Chinese students to a small degree, but to a larger degree, it's in saying that sta doesn't need any more of these math whiz Chinese students. Sta has enough? Like there needs to be a limit before there are too many Chinese students? Imagine if someone said "we have enough Entitled white boys," or "we already have enough athletic black boys.". Both statements trade in stereotypes and suggest that there ought to be limits to the number of boys of particular races, as more would be... Bad. I don't think pp can claim that the comment had no negative connotations.

This article says nothing about Chinese students being math whizzes, and it isn't even about the full-pay Chinese students to whom pp seemingly referred (boarders). It isn't even talking about Chinese students. It's talking about Asian American students. So I'm sorry, what facts? The comment and the article are not particularly aligned.

Soccer, yes, because they are an area powerhouse.

Crew and lacrosse, yes, because those are traditional prep school sports and their rowers and laxers do get recruited by great schools.

But football? I think not. If you are a recruitable player, you need to look at places like Bullis or SJC.

This post is wholly ignorant. First, soccer recruiting is all done through clubs these days -- it has nothing to do with high school teams. The only STA student to go to a Division I soccer school in 15 years could not even play at St. Albans due to the rules barring Academy players from playing hs soccer. Second, yes, of course football players at St. Albans can and do get recruited, as do football players from other academically strong non-football powerhouses in this area such as Sidwell. Football programs spend a lot of money on recruiting and leave no stone unturned. The assistant coaches make the rounds at all the schools. A St. Albans 2017 graduate got a full scholarship to UVA after only taking up football at St. Albans his junior year (he was a very good basketball player too).

Don't believe what people on anonymous boards say (that goes for me, too). Talk to coaches (both HS and club to get perspective) directly to get an understanding of how recruiting works.

And according to PP, couldn’t possibly do anything besides math. There have never been any Chinese athletes, writers, artists, or performers. Nope, just math whizzes. (I’m not criticizing you post, to be clear. I’m the person who originally posted that I hope the “Chinese math whiz” poster is not a STA parent).

I think a distinction needs to be made between Chinese from China and Americans who may be of Chinese or other Asian descent. I believe the prior post was focused on the former.

Has the Beauvoir pipeline been contracting lately?

Will Covid make it easier to get in this coming admissions cycle?

Not at all. Something like 32 or 33 boys going to sta next year from BVR.

Likely yes, at every school.

Same as most years. So the question is what the demand will be for the remaining 15 or so places. I imagine not all that different from any other year.

+1. That PP is an embarrassingly ill-informed imbecile.
