Athletics still provides a big hook for STA grads into top universities. In each class, at least 10-15 will be recruited (for soccer, football, crew, lacrosse, and baseball). That is an important thing to consider.
Soccer, yes, because they are an area powerhouse. Crew and lacrosse, yes, because those are traditional prep school sports and their rowers and laxers do get recruited by great schools. But football? I think not. If you are a recruitable player, you need to look at places like Bullis or SJC.
This post is wholly ignorant. First, soccer recruiting is all done through clubs these days -- it has nothing to do with high school teams. The only STA student to go to a Division I soccer school in 15 years could not even play at St. Albans due to the rules barring Academy players from playing hs soccer. Second, yes, of course football players at St. Albans can and do get recruited, as do football players from other academically strong non-football powerhouses in this area such as Sidwell. Football programs spend a lot of money on recruiting and leave no stone unturned. The assistant coaches make the rounds at all the schools. A St. Albans 2017 graduate got a full scholarship to UVA after only taking up football at St. Albans his junior year (he was a very good basketball player too). Don't believe what people on anonymous boards say (that goes for me, too). Talk to coaches (both HS and club to get perspective) directly to get an understanding of how recruiting works.
