King Abdullah Academy Closing: FCPS Buy for HS?

It would be nice if this solved the split feeder craziness and allowed elementary schools to progress as units all together wherever they go after that.

Carson has 273 kids from Franklin --I assume it is almost all AAP.

That includes: Oak Hill; Navy; Waples Mill?; Lee's Corner
So, that brings Carson to0 1000. Double that and it reaches 2000 for high school.

This is all conjecture based on vague guesses bas 8ed on four years of elementary schools:
Fox Mill goes to South Lakes. That reduces Westfield attendees by around 400 (some are at AAP at Oak Hill)
So, now, Westfield would be 1600 Carson kids.
Crossfield has 325-350 so that brings 1200-1275 of Carson from Westfield
Floris has around 400 (some AAP might be at McNair) so that brings around 1000 being pulled from Westfield

One school being moved in should do the trick at Westfield. Also, 42 were selected this year for TJ. If that is typical, then I would guess at around 70-80 over four years.

Franklin MS sends a bunch of AAP kids to Carson, those kids go to Chantilly and Oakton for HS. I am guessing here, but I would think that there are about 750 students where Carson is their base MS, but that might be high. Carson also sends a good number of kids to TJ, so that will drop the number of kids who would go to the new HS. And I would think that some kids would pupil place to SLHS for IB.

Creating more split feeders? Carson sending kids to Westfield, South Lakes, Oakton and KAA? No.

My prediction:

South Lakes stays put
Floris: currently partial population at Westfield goes to KAA; may send SL partial to KAA
Coates: Westfield to KAA
McNair: Westfield to KAA
Oak HIll: Chantilly to KAA
Crossfield: Oakton to KAA depending on numbers

One elementary school: Centreville to Westfield

the person before you said 273 from franklin. so 1077 base carson? doubled is 2150 which maybe they can fit maybe not. the school was built for way less. it would be great if the SB would tell us what they plan to do with the site. how many students they plan to pull.

It sounded like they will do that next Fall. But, it seems pretty clear to me.

Leave Fox Mill at South Lakes
Add in Oak Hill to KAA. That relieves Chantilly.

All area high schools should then be below 2500.

Take away IB from South Lakes and Herndon will also be at a proper enrollment.

concerns about the KAA site and it’s feasibility to fulfill the needs of an FCPS HS. Lack of outdoor space and a need to expand the indoor space are major issues that will cost lots of money and time to address. If it becomes a standard HS they will need a couple years to get it ready.

Oh yeah. I tooooootally believe you. cough*bullshit*cough

A large percentage of Carson are AAP. kids - all the Navy kids will go to Oakton and that's probably half of AAP.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard of similar sentiments coming from staff. No idea who the original poster of the info is btw.

Staff may have to spend time working to get new school up and running. Look how little effort they have put in fixing Coates. Answer to every bit of overcrowding..."A TRAILER FOR YOU!...and a trailer for you! And a trailer for you!

I’m neighbors with someone in the upper floors of gatehouse. Sounds like there are real concerns about starting a HS with space deficiencies especially in the day and age of “equity”. That being said there are SB members that want this to happen so it will happen, but at a much slower pace and with a bunch of renovation costs.

It will free up space at all the western high schools, so the glaring empty seats at Herndon won't be so obvious or so needed to be filled, so there would be less pressure to move those kids over to HHS. What am I missing?

That group has a very valid point re: lack of disclosure and process. Read their last paragraph again.

And if a brand new, beautiful high school had suddenly been purchased in say, the McLean or Great Falls area with no disclosure or transparency, we all know exactly what kind of criticism and fallout would occur.

If there was a "new Rich People high school" bond and plan on the books for 15+ years? No one would be surprised.

As a reminder only $25 million had been bonded and earmarked for a new western HS. The other $125M had not been funded in a bond so they are going to have to defer other projects which to date haven’t been identified.

You aren’t allowed to ask questions! Just give them the $150 million, no questions asked.

Centreville expansion is funded at $300 million. it can be scaled back--not eliminated or deferred. It can go on schedule and still get expanded--just not to 3000 students.

And she’s back, pretending to have all the answers when the school board has given us none.
