If this is really true than you should be working with the rest of the community - everyone in Oak Hill - to ask FCPS to wait and give it another year before opening the new school. I think EVERYONE can agree that would be best for all children. But nope, you just want your kids to do sports at Oakton. |
While I'm just over here happy your obvious stalling tactic didn't work out. |
Seriously doubt this contingent exists, so you don't need to be either. |
Some of these people don't just want their high schoolers to stay at Oakton... they don't want to rezoned ever. They want all of their kids to go to Oakton, however far into the future that may be. They aren't seeing the writing on the wall that Oakton is likely to end up overcrowded and guess who will get pushed out, probably to South Lakes, because the new high school is full? Crossfield. |
Who is working to delay the opening for a year? I only know about the Oakton people. How are people whose kids would be moved from Chantilly/Westfield/South Lakes feeling? I imagine the parents of current high schoolers at those schools have the same concerns? I would be careful pushing to delay the opening if I had a kid in 7th grade right now. If they open next year, they are much more likely to let kids choose to stay put or go to the new school for the next two years because they can only do so much construction if there are people in the building. If they wait a year, they might get more done and say ok it's all ready now no reason for rising 9th graders not to have to go to the new school... |
Because property values in South lakes and Westfield will probably go up. Chantilly stay the same and Oakton family home values will more than likely drop 10-20% |
This is a joke! I don't think this is going to impact property values - it's a beautiful new high school with the exact same peer group these kids have at Carson and very similar to what they would get at Oakton. |
No, just no. Property values aren't going to drop when kids get moved to the newest, nicest school in the county. They wouldn't even drop that much if the move was to South Lakes with their IB nonsense. |
Similar houses zoned to Oakton, SL, Chantilly and even Westfield sell for similar prices now. Maybe 10-15 years ago this was not the case, but it is no longer true. Oakton families who live in Herndon are a little delusional about their property values. |
I found it amusing that those people who had questioned the KAA purchase and tried to stall the process became quiet once the maps were out and it's clear that the Herndon and Great Falls boundary wouldn't be affected. |
I think they're also a little delusional about how amazing Oakton is too. I'm getting "peaked in high school" vibes from some of these parents. |

Our friends from Oak Hill are less then excited by the change, they are all happy at Chantilly. Most of the ones with kids in HS will keep their kids at Chantilly and not move to KAA, we know a bunch of Freshman at Chantilly. I get it, the kids have started establishing themselves at Chantilly and have friends there. The only Oak Hill families I know who are excited are the Emrald Chase families who did not want to move to Fox Mill and SLHS or stay at Westfield. They wanted to go to school with their ES and MS friends.
Our friends at South Lakes are split, some are really excited by the move while others are less so. Some of our friends who are less excited have kids into sports, they have siblings at SLHS, they love the drama program, or they are interested in the IB program. SLHS is the known entity and they are less excited by the new school that is an unknown. Others are thrilled because they don't like the IB program or think it is a good fit. Some are excited by the different classes that could be offered. I think Floris is happy to be reunited since the ES has been split for so long. I can see parents with kids at Oakton being less excited. Oakton is an excellent school with an established track record. It is one of the top schools in FCPS, leaving it for an unknown entity is going to be hard. I know some families are happy to do so because they bus ride is really long and they are comfortable with the population that will be at the new school. The Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill kids are all high achieving type kids/families so you can expect a strong academic peer group. I don't know Coates or McNair so I can't speak to those schools. Moving schools is not easy and moving from a top school to the unknown is disconcerting. I get that. |
They neither became quiet nor expected the boundaries for the western high school would immediately affect the Herndon/Langley boundary. Nice try. |
To clarify, Floris is only reunited in one Option (Scenario B I believe). "A" keeps the current split, and "B" and "D" create a bigger split by pulling out the Dulles Discovery neighborhoods. |
