FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

Most of the ones with kids in HS will keep their kids at Chantilly and not move to KAA, we know a bunch of Freshman at Chantilly. I get it, the kids have started establishing themselves at Chantilly and have friends there. The only Oak Hill families I know who are excited are the Emrald Chase families who did not want to move to Fox Mill and SLHS or stay at Westfield. They wanted to go to school with their ES and MS friends.

Our friends at South Lakes are split, some are really excited by the move while others are less so. Some of our friends who are less excited have kids into sports, they have siblings at SLHS, they love the drama program, or they are interested in the IB program. SLHS is the known entity and they are less excited by the new school that is an unknown. Others are thrilled because they don't like the IB program or think it is a good fit. Some are excited by the different classes that could be offered.

I think Floris is happy to be reunited since the ES has been split for so long.

I can see parents with kids at Oakton being less excited. Oakton is an excellent school with an established track record. It is one of the top schools in FCPS, leaving it for an unknown entity is going to be hard. I know some families are happy to do so because they bus ride is really long and they are comfortable with the population that will be at the new school. The Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill kids are all high achieving type kids/families so you can expect a strong academic peer group. I don't know Coates or McNair so I can't speak to those schools.

Moving schools is not easy and moving from a top school to the unknown is disconcerting. I get that.

That pretty much sums it up

Well, the Oak HIll people were certainly not happy when the neighborhood was going to be split in Option 3. And, this is a good solution for them. And, if it weren't for KAA, they could still be up for grabs.

I wonder if Oak Hill lobby to stay at Chantilly, and the Emerald Chase people will get moved to Fox Mill and KAA after all?

It was a tiny portion of Oak Hill - just one neighborhood.

I don't think you understood. The Oak Hill being discussed is the elementary school which is mostly Chantilly Highlands and Franklin Farm west of 286 (or south?). The "tiny portion" was actually a chunk of the Chantilly Highlands neighborhood--which is a pretty tight neighborhood composed mostly of walkers to Oak Hill Elem. People were quite upset that THRU wanted to split the neighborhood. (They had houses right next door going to different high schools.) The latest THRU option did not pull that chunk out.

That would be an interesting outcome.

I would be surprised if Oak Hill gets to stay at Chantilly given the overcrowding. Who would go to KAA in their place? And who would love out of Chantilly? In all four options Oak Hill goes there.

Yeah I haven’t heard from any Oak Hill parents planning to lobby against the change. Given that Chantilly is overcapacity and Oak Hill is one of the two closest schools to KAA, everyone pretty much assumed we would end up there which was confirmed in all 4 scenarios.

I live in Chantilly Highlands- the Oak Hill neighborhood in question. The Ladybank carve out was ridiculous - it was literally one street in a tightly connected neighborhood. I think for the most part families are happy with Chantilly, our former well-liked elementary school admin heads it and we’ve seen good outcomes but we are the furthest distance wise, I believe, and the trailer situation is not good. The sports are strong and that is probably what gives many the most pause. That said I think an all fresh/soph class at the new school gives JV sports a chance to gel and if they do the AI and Engineering sub programs there are a ton of families interested in that who think TJ is too far. It will be rocky at times but it will also be a new modern school with advanced facilities and potentially advanced curriculum- honestly the Oakton families can stay at Oakton if they love it so much- plenty of people willing to take the chance on a next-gen school though we will remain fond of Chantilly which so many of our kids attended happily.

Very well said! It’s definitely gonna be tough on the first kids but hopefully they will be able excited to create all the traditions for the school. My kid is currently in elementary school, but we’re excited to rally around the new high school as a community. Definitely will plan to go to games, performances and buy swag to support the school.

Your take is refreshing, in contrast to the whining going on from the Oakton parents. They’re going to ruin the chance for younger kids to go to a new high school closer to home. I am totally over these people.

Very well said! I have a middle schooler who is very excited about the new school and the pool much closer to our house than Chantilly.

Also, a Chantilly Highlands resident. The only ones I've heard complain are the ones whose kids will be the first to go. Personally, I was thrilled to have a school close by.

I don’t understand why crossfield and fox mill aren’t fighting to go to the new school. It’s been said here before that crossfield can either come to the new school now or get zoned to south lakes in the next 5 year boundary nonsense. And Fox mill is super close too and most families there want AP.

Some of the parents of older elementary school students at Crossfield think of Oakton as an elite school. That's why.
