US has no good options in Ukraine

This is classic conventional wisdom, and it may still hold true. However, the big problem here is that Putin is mad enough that he just might not care if he takes the whole world down with him. We just don't know. And because of that we can't make absolute conclusions about Russia and nuclear warfare.

The problem with comments like these is that it assumes there are people in Putin's inner circle thinking like an American would.

All is takes is someone who doesn’t want a nuclear war because some nut is on a power trip.

This is where I hope the tin foilers are not actually crazy and there’s some legit security relationship between the US and aliens from outer space. I need a drink.

Not to worry. James Bond is in orbit and a fleet of space shuttles is ready to destroy any nukes with laser beams...

I’ve made it a point for most of my adult life to avoid learning about weapons of mass destruction. It’s upsetting to me. I’m asking an honest question, and your snark isn’t appreciated.

You need to lighten up or grow tougher skin. Maybe both?

Let’s hope his inner circle is reading DCUM and sees your "step up". Then they’ll know what to do.

If Pakistan ever does that, there is enough population in India that will survive but India will make sure that every Pakistani is glassed and Islam in India will be erased for good.

Are you kidding? Every other poster here is labeled "Vlad" or "Sergei". Of course they read DCUM!

This is what the West should be worried about. A madman with his finger on the nuclear button.

Is Putin angry enough to kill millions of people? He's a murderer. There are rumors that he's ill with Parkinsons. He's 70.

This is the big gamble. Does he love Russia enough to protect it from assured destruction if he starts a nuclear war, which will destroy much of the world?

Or is a he just a bully waving his weapons around?

He's increasingly isolated, and his own people are angry with him.

I think he's bluffing, but of course I thought he was bluffing (again) about invading Ukraine.

All I have to say is that I’m relieved we have a sane human on our side with the nuclear codes.

Imagine if we still have the mentally-ill dotard at the helm? We’d already be dead.

Biden also listened to and trusted our intelligence agencies. He got out in front of the invasion and called out Russia's false flag operations openly and publicly. Weren't Republicans screaming that this was unwarranted hysteria just a few weeks ago? I guess they don't like the narrative where America and its allies win (if it means that it looks good for Biden and the Democrats).

The ONLY thing Biden has done right is to declassify the intelligence regarding the invasion. Republicans were not screaming that it was unwarranted hysteria. What they WERE calling for is ..... if the intelligence was accurate.... why in the the hell was Biden not imposing sanctions earlier? The same cries came from many Democrats as well. If he considered the sanctions a deterrent as he and several members of his administration claimed, then why wait.
I think Biden secretly knows he screwed up in this regard and that is why he has pivoted from calling the sanctions a "deterrent" and said that they were never intended to "prevent anything."

This is what is so maddening.

Because you don't penalize someone before they commit the crime. You are a fool. Is that so hard to understand?

Yeah. This is Looney thinking. You can't impose sanctions before something's actually been done. What the hell?

And, his strategy has worked, oh, so well.
Funny how we put sanctions on other countries (like Iran) before they commit a crime.
But, amassing tens of thousands of troops at the border of Ukraine and Putin saying that he intended to enter on a "peace keeping" mission is somehow now serious enough to warrant serious sanctions.

This is a very unserious administration.

Maybe. But how is that relevant to Russia?

Oh, you can but then Russia can claim a grievance as an unjustified and unwarranted act of aggression by the U.S. Do you really think our allies would have been unified in the response if that had been the case? Jeez, you Republicans are such idiots.

Actually it is working quite well. But I guess it's inconvenient when things work out for Democrats or when they start to look strong on foreign policy, isn't it? Or, when your dear leader and his authoritarian boss suddenly are on the outs. But keep doubling down on losers and losing propositions.

This. They stood by and/or encouraged multiple aggressions, most recently Ukraine. These are people who stand by as Putin literally has political adversaries poisoned and/or killed and/or imprisoned in gulags (Navalny).

Just the fact that nuclear weapons are now part of the picture is very worrisome. It escalates this exponentially. I’m an American and deeply concerned. Never in my adult life have I felt so concerned about the prospect of WW3. Never.
