"With the threat of a U.S. government shutdown looming at the end of the month, local officials in border towns are worried that staff shortages among federal workers would make it harder to stop criminal activity and process an influx of migrants. Victor Treviño, the mayor of Laredo, Tex., foresees a “catastrophic situation” if House Republicans are unable to agree on a spending plan.

“It's totally different than the rest of the country. We're at the border,” Treviño says. “Three to four days will throw everything off scale, it'll cause devastation.” If the shutdown occurs, he says he’s prepared to declare a state of emergency." https://time.com/6317364/border-security-government-shutdown-migrants/

It is already devastating.
Border agents are not patrolling. They are processing.

Biden has not heeded their calls for increased border security. He has not listened to the border towns that have already declared emergencies because there are 10,000 migrants entering daily.

It is the Democrats who are refusing to fund border security. They want to allocate money to "processing." It is like using a bucket to bail out a sinking ship instead of plugging the hole.

So the solution is to make things worse by supporting a govt shutdown? As the mayor of Laredo, TX said: "'Three to four days will throw everything off scale, it'll cause devastation.' If the shutdown occurs, he says he’s prepared to declare a state of emergency."

This was also in the linked piece:

Doris Meissner, senior fellow at the Migration Policy Institute, argues that “the shutdown should not be so noticeable” in border towns. That’s because law enforcement employees are typically exempt from government shutdowns; they will not be paid during a shutdown, but typically would continue working and get their pay retroactively once the shutdown ends. The longest government shutdown lasted for 34 days under the Trump Administration, and there wasn’t a major exodus of law enforcement employees in border towns during that time, according to Meissner. “The exemption for law enforcement agencies is very broad now,” Meissner says. “I'm quite confident that CBP [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] particularly—given the pressures that it's under right now on the border—will establish those definitions as broadly as possible exactly for the reasons that [Treviño] is talking about.”

Well Mitch McConnell has a different take:

"McConnell called out his colleagues on their new switch to complain about border security: “A vote against a standard short-term funding measure is a vote against paying over $1 billion in salary for Border Patrol and ICE agents working to track down lethal fentanyl and tame our open borders. Shutting down the government isn’t an effective way to make a point,” he said."

Yep. That is what these people are doing.

But, you can’t just deport people back to the countries they come from.

This can't be right, I've been told over and over again by conservatives that even floating the idea of "defunding the police" is the sole cause of decreased policing and increased crime.

If all these extra murders in DC are because someone somewhere said "we should defund the police" and nobody ever even even did it, who can even imagine what apocalyptic nightmare scenario will result from asking law enforcement on the border to work without any pay at all?! It'll be utter chaos! Unless of course, the whole premise is made up GOP nonsense...

You are truly an idiot.
When localities defund the police, as some have, and severely cut funding, that means there is less funding to maintain a police force and hire and recruit additional officers which then means there are fewer police to make arrests and patrol the streets.
But, you knew that.

It's really a shame that Elon can make the trip but Biden' won't.

More than 50,000 in five days.
The numbers this month are going to be horrendous.

Has she been down to the border? She is making all these comments about how secure the borders are. You can sneak a nuke across that border and not get caught, above and below grounds. I mean millions are flooding. I would not be surprised if the Chinese, the Russians and the North Koreans have not paid Cartel members to smuggle agents into the country. Now she is right if she means that the border is secure because you cannot drive a tank across the board.

I am sick of this nonsense. We don't know who is coming across those borders. She is looney-tune and not dealing in reality. I cannot abide the politics of the governors of Texas and Florida, but I heartily agree that people who speak stupid crap about how secure the borders are need these people bused and flown to their neighborhoods unattended.

Reality is somewhere between Ayanna Presley and the hyperbolic nutjob poster above who thinks the Chinese, Russians and North Koreans are working with the cartels to sneak nuclear bombs across our border.

Which localities have defunded the police?

NYC, for one.

Facing pressure from thousands of constituents calling to defund the police, New York City slashed $1 billion from the police budget. But some city lawmakers – and the protesters calling for change – think the cuts weren’t sweeping enough.

The City Council approved the $88.9 billion 2021 budget late Tuesday night while hundreds of protesters, many of whom have camped outside City Hall for a week, waited to hear the results.

The New York Police Department is the largest force in the US and employs over 55,000. The department budget was almost $6 billion for the 2020 fiscal year.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/01/us/new-york-budget-nypd-1-billion-cut-trnd/index.html

And, they have not recovered from the cuts.
They are understaffed, underpaid, and they are leaving in record numbers. Can't say I blame them.

Not a surprise, given we have had multiple days this month with over 10,000 a day.
But, the border is closed according to Mayorkas.
