What your designer bag says about you

Exactly. Comes of bitter and jealous. I'm in my 40s and I have 3 of the "rated" bags. I saved for the bags because I loved the look and knew that they would be classic pieces that were made well enough to last decades. They HAVE lasted decades and look excellent. The way I look at it is that I'd rather have 3 good quality purses, luggage, suits, shoes or what ever over 15 generic pieces that last a limited time or aren't classic/timeless.

Go treat yourself, get a 4th bag and a sense of humor

I have most of these bags and thought OP’s assessment was funny.

Expensive designers bags, since they are leather, are heavy and weigh a ton. For the size I need. I have to go in another direction.

Most of these seem indistinguishable from the leather totes I see at Target, tbh

. It says you are true to yourself and you don't let others influence you. It says you love yourself and value your own opinion. I think that's pretty awesome and something I aspire to be.

They're not known for bags. Pretty much everything besides their classic trench coats is trash. It's whatever you can buy to get that plaid on the cheap to show a designer label. I've never known anyone who actually has money who has wanted and purchased a Burberry bag.

Haha. Funny that I have one Burberry tote in black and white checker pattern. I love it and I would like to think I have money to burn. I also on occasion wear a no name cross body little thing too.

It says you want to be seen as “above it all” and have to mention it’s from a “fair trade store” while shopping at WF.

I don’t talk about my purse and I don’t shop at WF. Safeway for me!

I love the pps willing to poke fun at themselves a bit. At the end of the day, we are discussing designer handbags, it’s hardly punching down and it’s all in good fun. The comments on the designers I own made me chuckle. It’s fashion, have a little fun.

I’m sorry, are Safeway shoppers allowed on dcum?!

That in the US, I shop at TJ Maxx … And only buy designer there if the bags are pretty, practical, simple and cost under $100. I guess that means I’m the Ultimate basic person?

I also like bags made by rural women in Africa who get to keep most of the money (recycled plastic bags, recycled soda can twists, Glorious African batik prints - again as long as they are pretty, practical, simple design and cost under $100-200. The most compliments I have received for a bag was African bag made of recycled plastic bags. It was so beautiful and clever.

Love OP’s perceptive whimsy - Reminds of the W Post fashion writer Robin Ghivan who was a keen observer of subtle messages people convey in their dress styles and then how that relates to current society .… She is now a senior critic-at-large writing about politics, race and the arts. Previously, she covered the fashion industry as a business.

I am in awe of people who can read so much meaning into small everyday details that usually I zone out during the course of each day.

Maybe I need to put more thought into what my bags say about me as it had never consciously crossed my mind.

Coach used to be solid quality and practical- back when they were made in NY. You could even send it in for cleaning and repairs. But they were never designer or meant to viewed that way

If you mean rich and also old, old school coach bags are common.

Yes the really old school coach leather purses back when they were made in the USA. Lots of these at the stuffy Episcopalian church my older relatives attend

This thread sent me back in my closet and I found my old navy Coach purse from high school (!) that I haven't used in so long it still looks pristine. Made for a perfect small cross-body while out and about yesterday. I forgot how well made and perfectly sized it is. (Episcopalian, BTW, but neither terribly old nor rich, and hopefully not too stuffy . . .)
