I think change is happening. Police reform is occurring. But that doesn’t mean we must crucify a cop who fired back after being shot at. |
| I am truly not understanding how this is a racist incident on behalf of the cops. If they shot through a wall in response to being shot at and unfortunately hit someone, that is an awful tragedy this woman lost her life but I don't see how it's racist. Someone please enlighten me. |
There will never be a perfect case. They've been moving the goalposts on us for 400 years. There will ALWAYS be a new excuse for a lack of equality. |

Agreed. But you haven’t layered the other important data in your analysis: poverty and crime. With that data, odds are significantly increased for black people to be involved with police. |
How many Blacks have to “take one for the team”? Unjustifiably and unnecessary snuffed out by overzealous and poorly trained officers with colleagues and supervisors who coddle them and cover for them instead of having these men being held accountable? At some point one of these cops is gonna have to return the favor and “take one for the team” too. The crucifixions cannot continue to be one-sided. |
She was shot in the hallway of her individual apartment unit, near the entrance to her bedroom. Her boyfriend - not the ex-boyfriend who was a criminal - fired first because he was standing his ground in what he thought was a home invasion. Please note: the boyfriend who shot a police officer in the leg was not charged with any crime. He was legally allowed to fire upon the officer. |
All of which are problems! You can't remove race from this, hard as you may try. Black people are mire likely to be poor, less educated, and live in higher-crime areas for reasons. Race is woven into all of this. |
| State AG married Mitch’s granddaughter and didn’t prosecute because he is a sellout |
Understood re: the new BF vs the old BF, and the first shots being fired in self-defense. A lot of confusion. This could have been handled dramatically better. But I also understand how she was accidentally shot in the hallway (not her bed like a pp said) alongside her BF who shot first (understandably given the confusion). I don’t see this as racism. |
OK, even if it isn't racism do you think it is OK? I certainly don't and that is part of what protesters are fighting about. |
Um, yes...I know. But do you realize how the total data explains the WaPo data? These aren’t random women getting shot; they are mired in criminal connections. That data matters. |
1) The history of this country shows that black suspects are treated differently than white ones. Her ex-BF was black. If he has been white would the police have been serving a no-knock warrant? What basis did the police have that made them think that this level of force was necessary? 2) If she has been white and killed in this manner it is unlikely that the cops would have been charged. I am not OK with that, are you? The racism part is only part of it- the protests absolutely are about race-based policing but also against unnecessary violence by police officers. |
Why aren't the leaders of the social justice movement taking credit for everything they accomplished? Six years ago, none of the things listed above would have happened. Change takes time. Sure, there is more work to be done but it will be hard. |
Exactly, I've been on the receiving end of a no knock warrant and I'm white. They wanted my roommate but I was still cuffed for the four hours they were there. |
