Lol, I have no fight in the game - but you are freaking delusional. |
Why isn't Columbia in this grouping ? It has been in this grouping for over a decade.
Even in the 1960's-1970's before US rankings it was in the 'Most Competitive' category for colleges. Most of the college students there have always had 700's in their board scores |
PP was a Columbia reject. That must have been a hard reject. |
Lucky for anyone who gets accepted. That would be great news. Then decide. |
Long thread - has he visited both OP at some stage? That would probably be the deciding factor but given Covid I can see visits being impossible now if not already happened.

Bob Kraft went in the late 1950's-early 1960's and loved Columbia as undergrad. He was a top student in high school and class president for four years. Then he went to HBS.
I don't get the caustic comments. Can someone explain ? Thank you. |
People have envy and will write unpleasant things.
Anyone who gets accepted to Columbia like Harvard deserves a pat on the back and gopd advice on how to choose wisely. Bob Kraft chose well both times, as anyone can see. I hope your kid gets into both universities, and if not the most important thing is to work hard and have passion whereever he/she goes. That is most important. |
These micro-distinctions are ridiculous. Both are fantastic institutions. Both provide remarkable educational opportunities and networking. for internships, etc.
Both have an endless stream of famous visiting speakers from the world stage, etc. My advice to a student : Choose which ever one you think that you will shine in. The nation should doff its thinking cap both to Columbia and Harvard as magnificnent urban universities. Both have colonial American foundations of great credit to the county's growth. |
Columbia:
Where 1/3 of the undergraduate general student population weren’t matriculated as freshmen. The School of General Studies, overwhelmingly loaded with older transfers, brags that they are fully integrated into the general student population. So while Columbia brags about its low acceptance rate, it’s important to realized that 3,000 out of 9,000 undergraduates weren’t accepted initially into the school out of high school. SAT scores, GPA’s, etc are not calculated by Columbia when the give their data to USNWR. Where the school brags about it’s low faculty to student ratio, but doesn’t include graduate students in the mix. Columbia has 9,000 undergraduates and over 24,000 graduate students. Its s/f ration should be at |
Columbia University:
Where the school brags about it’s low faculty to student ratio, but doesn’t include graduate students in the mix. Columbia has 9,000 undergraduates and over 24,000 graduate students. Its s/f ration should be closer 9:1 instead of the reported 6:1. |
What is school of general studies columbia?
The School of General Studies is Columbia’s college for nontraditional students who want to earn a degree while attending full- or part-time. Nontraditional students have had a break of one year or more in their educational... They aren’t considered transfer students by Columbia, but take classes alongside students from the other colleges at Columbia. In other words, transfer students. Just another way Columbia plays the USNWR game into an elevated, and overrated ranking. Columbia is not HYPSM and no amount of manipulation is going to change that fact. |
Harvard’s setting is better. |
You need to compare apples to apples. Columbia school of general studies is like Harvard extension. The latter currently has about 30,000 enrollment, according to wiki. And in my company, it's not unusual for some HS grad person to say he or she attended the 2 week Harvard Kennedy School this or that. |
I think the question on thios dicussion board assumes that we are discussing Columbia College and the School of Engineering for undergraduates, not General Studies. General Studies is somewhat analogous to Harvard Extension School, although a formal college for students over age 21 who interrupted some years from their education. Very speartate as a degree granting institution from the college and engineering schools. The School of General Studies excellent program, but separate instituion withint he university.
The College and School of Engineering do not manipulate any SAT scores, grades from high school or student to faculty ratio. The 6:1 ration is correct. Most of my classes were small classes, including for the core courses; and independent/supervised study tutorials with professors were fully available to any student who sought to engage in individualized research ( humanities and sciences). What are you conjuring out of an imaginary bottle ? Crazy, untrue allegations. |
Except for the fact that the SGS students are taking classes with Columbia College students. It’s not a separate situation. |
