Man, I actually looked up SHECV. UVa is not even the most selective school in Virignia. Its SAT / ACT scores are slightly lower than those of W&L. Do you think Duke is worse than W&L? https://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp |
. You are looking at UVA-Wise, not UVA. The UVA entries are temporarily down. |
1. Can we agree that comparing schools based on weighted GPAs is silly? Just stop. 2. Using the stats of enrolled students, as SCHEV does, doesn't provide a fully accurate picture of a school's selectivity. Need to look at admitted students' stats. 3. I don't think anyone is arguing that UVA is more selective or prestigious than Duke. The question is whether that prestige difference is worth $40K per year? |
Thank you for taking things back to the beginning. Every school-specific thread winds up as a dumping ground for people have a chip on their shoulders. One doesn't need to tear one school down to answer the OP's question. |

GPAs are problematic because there are no standards. And increases over time are often portrayed as an increase in selectivity, but there is significant grade inflation at the high school level, and that would have to be accounted for in any analysis. Admitted students stats are usually above the enrolled students stats because many high stats will go to another school. This happens all the way up to Harvard and Stanford. So I don't think it is the best indicator. I agree with point 3. If admitted to both, I think they should take a look at aid packages, evaluate their situation, make a decision, and don't look back. |
I was looking at 2018-2019 numbers. UVA-C is behind W&L. |
Except one UVa cheerleader kept saying UVa is more selective than Duke. That drives me crazy. |
|
In the 1980s, I was accepted to Duke and Wait listed at UVA ( from MoCo). I know, I know, times have changed. It just means each school picks who they want for their own reasons.
My resume has always started with Duke, and I feel it has always opened doors to jobs and an Ivy grad school. |
OOS, the admission stats and costs are going to be more similar. UVA cost will be closer to Duke and admission rates will be closer. But I would imagine the OOS cross-admits heavily favor Duke. |
When it comes to out of state admissions, yes, UVA is probably on par with Duke. But 2/3 of the class are in state, as is OP's kid. |
Funny. Shows how important is is to understand and use data points in context. |
I believe a very high percentage of OOS UVA cross-admits with Duke will choose Duke. Costs are pretty close. |
| Duke is EXTREMELY difficult to get into. If he does make the cut, count yourself fortunate. Their applicant acceptance rate was 10% as of 4 years ago. |
| im a duke grad and id go to ova unless cost is same with aid. then kid should decide which he likes better. |
