No. The NPV includes the in-state cost difference. |
This, plus W&M athletes benefit from alumni recruiting. For example, many of the Lacrosse players go to Wall Street. |
| W&M has D1 Women's and Men's lacrosse? I thought it was just a club sport. |
W&M has D1 women's lacrosse. No men's program. But this thread is about Duke and UVA, so not sure why this was even mentioned. |
This is bc Duke has way more private school kids with unweighted GPA's. I went there and it's FULL of privilege. It's like a country club. SO MANY KIDS FROM ELITE PRIVATES AND BOARDING SCHOOLS. Not a good experience for kids on financial aid. Beautiful place, excellent education but not for everyone. |
They probably use the average cost of UVA which includes out-of-state tuition. There is no way Duke will have a net plus of $30k for the 10 year NPV compared to UVA in-state. I can understand if they amortize that cost difference over 30 or 40 years, Duke may come out ahead. So I don't think it's a fair comparison to the UVA in-state cost. |
The other study had median earnings of $76,700 for Duke vs. $58,600 for UVA. It wouldn't take many years with that earnings differential to overcome the higher net cost. |
I haven’t thought of this book is a while, but I’m pretty sure I am Charlottes Simmons by Tom Wolfe is set there and the main character is from a modest background and it deals with (in part) her dealing with seeing wealth and privilege. It’s also about partying, so not the most happy book. |
The percent of students at UVA and Duke who come from private vs public is virtually identical - 67% from public at Duke and 68% at UVA. |
Duke doesn't report average high school GPA. The 4.06 was just some publication's estimate with no data. Even if they did, you can't readily compare GPAs coming from different schools. UNC-CH, South Carolina, and Florida all have higher GPAs than UVA, I believe, which in turn has higher reported GPAs than Harvard. None of it is calculated in a consistent way. |
Isn’t that also the “scene” at UVA? Yacht club / ski chalet kids that wear dinner jackets to football games? |
No. It’s a public school. Most of the population is Virginia residents and not just nova. There are a couple frats known for being wealthy but you’ll find that everywhere. |

No, it's not. I teach there. It has exactly what you would expect the student body to be for a state school - a healthy mix of all economic levels, diversity, international students, low-income, URM, first-generation, etc. etc. |
