You guys. The Disney version of The Little Mermaid (both story and title character) are radically different from the original, too. Stories change and evolve. The difference between Halle Baily and the Disney version of the Little Mermaid title character is tiny compared with the difference between the original story's title character and Disney's Ariel.
Right? I thought that, too--in the original fairy tale, the Little Mermaid does not get the prince. He's going to marry someone else, which means that she will DIE. Her sisters bring her a knife to stab him so his blood will restore her tail, but she doesn't do it, and turns into sea foam. Obviously, Disney's Little Mermaid is a VERY different story. So who cares if they make a completely superficial change? There is literally no reason that a mythical character can't have brown skin. Cultures around the world have mermaid myths. And the cartoon version will still exist, for those who prefer it, for whatever reasons.
The Disney story is still based on that story, not on any other mermaid story. Many of the Disney stories are softened in some way, that doesn't cut the ties to the underlying story.
