Do you have to back into every parking space?

I don't mind other people doing it with the exception of when I'm in a parking garage and someone is doing it on a parking space on one of the ramps up to the next floor. Seriously, go to the next floor and back into a space. There's a huge line of cars in both lanes waiting for you.

This is the point of the thread. No one cares if you back in when there aren’t cars around waiting for you.

Isn't that going to be offset by the time you would have to wait for me to back out if I had pulled in to begin with? One way or the other, you are going to have to wait for me. The difference is that I'm less likely to back into you (or your kid or your stroller or anything else) if I'm backing into the space versus backing into the lane of traffic. And before you call me a shitty driver, its not me saying so; it's the statistics that say so. Did you know that 9% of pedestrian deaths occur in parking lots?

Saying "I might run over you if I back out of a parking spot" kind of detracts from your other main argument that "people who back into parking spots are better drivers". You're admitting that if you had to back out instead of back in, you would probably run someone over.

Imagine you've returned to your car to find that vans or SUV's have parked on either side of you. There is absolutely no way to see to either side, and you are forced to back out while taking that nervous leap of faith that no person or thing is about to appear directly behind your car. We've all seen that kid or old person walk right in the path of a vehicle in this circumstance. Some are lucky, but sadly, some are not.

Don't most cars have rear cameras at this point? When I bought in 2014 it was standard even in the cheap models of the cars I looked at (mid range stuff like Subaru)

Love all the posters assuming that rear view cameras see all and solve all problems. Mine is a huge help but doesn't have a view where it could let me see someone approaching from the side behind me. I can see behind me, yes, but don't have much "peripheral vision" to the sides on that screen. The camera does help but it's not perfect and I think a lot of drivers actually are sloppier and more careless about backing once they're used to the cameras and assume the cameras will save them from missing a person or vehicle that suddenly steps or drives behind them.

At this point in the thread, anyone still taking this argument seriously is an idiot. Just do what you want to do. Who cares either way.

Usually, when I see a car ahead of me backing into a parallel parking space on the street, they’ve used a turn signal and slowed way down as they approached the space, making it obvious what they were about to do. Unfortunately, vast majority of times that a driver ahead of me in a parking lot wants to back into a space, they haven’t used a turn signal or slowed way down. They appear to drive past the open space, then suddenly throw their car into reverse without warning. THAT’S the only part of other drivers backing into parking spaces that bothers me. If you communicate your intentions in advance so I’m not caught off guard by your car suddenly coming at mine in reverse, then I’m fine with your backing in.

This!!!

Agree with this. You back-in parkers need to realize that this is a newer idea. For most of the time people have been driving automobiles, it has not been typical to back into parking spaces. If you are going to do this, you need to signal.

Minivan and my DH's SUV are impossible to back up (even with all of the back up cameras)- they are too big!

Yeah. I wonder what size cars these posters who claim that backing in is easier have.

I back an ambulance up into regular size parking spaces several times a day with just the side mirrors. No camera, no rear view mirror. We back in because it's departmental policy, extensive studies by IIHS have shown that backing into a space is far safer when leaving the space than backing out.

Plus, backing into a space shows that a person is capable of forethought and strategic planning, whereas people who pull into spaces tend to be all about the moment, instant gratification, and are very poor thinkers overall.

If you can't back up into a space, you shouldn't have a driver's license. You are a hazard to yourself and everyone around you.

Amen.

I back in or pull through mostly because so many parents let small kids walk in parking lots (everywhere-grocery, mall, school) without holding hands and I cannot see those kids when backing. I saw several terrifying close calls in parking lots where a parent blithely held a baby or pushed a stroller and let junior of 3 or 4 walk behind the parent. .Insanely thoughtless.

Pulling through is the most dangerous option available to someone who is trying to park because drivers/ pedestrians in the other lane do not anticipate your car rolling through into that space. Another car might be pulling into it as you are pulling through, or someone might be walking at a quick pace to open their car door wide into that spot since its empty. Or a kid may be jumping out of their car into the empty spot next to them. Please never do this.

Oh please. I can pull through and I'm not doing it fast. It's a crawl. I can see those cars on each side. I'm going to see that person "walking quickly to open that door" etc. Because... I'm moving forward and can SEE what's ahead of me and I'm not zipping into the space. Yes! I've nearly pulled through when someone pulled in from the other side. And we all lived, because I was doing it at a crawl. Like you're supposed to do when parking in any direction. Don't worry, I usually back in anyway. Don't all your worries also apply to backing too?

pp - I have a rear camera that includes good peripheral vision and beeps like crazy if anything moves on the camera, including a freaking paper bag about 20 feet away, so actually I feel very safe backing out. Pulling through- an illegal, unexpected maneuver- is just ridiculous. What if the person who had the right of way wasn't going slow enough to stop in time? What if the person darts out from behind her car into that spot to put her kid in the car because THE SPOT IS EMPTY and you don't see her until it's too late? I'm just saying, follow the law which is there for a reason.

Same goes for people pulling forward into into a spot. Always cracks me up when I see a compact car that is super crooked or pulled all the way to one side in a spot. If I can back my SUV into a spot in 1 move AND be centered between the lines, then they should be able to do the same.

Sometimes you have to park off-center because you’ve pulled in between two cars that have parked off-center.

I know that person is going to come back with their purchases and try to load them into their car -- somehow (not sure what their plan was) -- and they won't be able to open the trunk because my bumper is in the way.
Park the way God intended -- forward.

Trunks open up not out. Are you saying you park your car on top of the one in front of you?

The morons that park like this drive SUVs. The trunk opens up and out. Except when my car is 1/8" away.

My Mercedes SUV open up. So even if you touched my bumper it wouldn't hit your car. All of this talking does not erase the fact that it is safer to back in and has been proven to be safer. If you can't back in, you are a poor driver. Some driving skills take practice, i.e. backing in and parallel parking. If you never do these things, then how can you become good at it? This is one thing I truly admire my DH on, he can parallel park in one swift motion. His skill made me want to be a better driver. So every chance I get, I practice these skills. I am a patient driver, so I don't mind waiting a few seconds if I'm behind a driver that decides to back in. We are teaching our teenage children to do the same when driving. I'm backing the GLS in every.single.time.

Have you ever thought about how annoying it is for those behind you to have to wait for you to practice these skills? Backing in is not necessary.

Really don't care about your annoyance. Why should I? It is better to be safe. I'm watching out for YOU.

And again for the cheap seats:

*AAA recommends that drivers reverse into parking spaces whenever possible, except where prohibited by law or parking lot restrictions. When faced with angled parking, drivers should follow the flow of traffic and pull forward into the parking space.

Anonymous wrote:Seriously. And how do you get your groceries into your car without bumping into the car next to you?
well this is a really asinine thing to complain about. You are waiting for the car to back up either going into the space or going out. The process of backing in is actually faster than backing out so what is it that you are really complaining about. It is also much safer for pedestrians and cars to back into the space. And when parking a van or SUV, you create more visibility for the adjacent car in a backed in position. You are crying about the wrong thing, baby!

Same people speeding on the highway like maniacs. Hardly think it's about safety-- more like power play.
OMG, you are funny and an idiot ! LOL!!!

You people are freakin' dumb.

Who knew people got that impatient for people backing into a parking spot? Now that I know that it pisses you prtentious dbags off in MoCo, I'll be sure to back into my parking spot 100% of the time from now on.
