I prefer to pull through, even if that means parking further away. I’m not one of those people that needs the closest spot. If the of the lot is full or busy, I’ll pull into any available space. I will back out slowly when it’s time to leave.
In the garage at work, I back in, it’s easier to pull out because of the pillars and my spot is 3 away from the ramp up/down. |
ALWAYS use pull through when available. Another Smith Driving tip. |

1) When backing out of a space, you run the risk of some jackass speeding by and causing a collision. Visibility is better when you're facing forward.
2) When backing out, you can't see pedestrians or small children as easily as you can if you're facing forward. 3) Ever been partially blocked by someone who double parked? The turning radius is better facing forward, so you have a greater chance of getting out in that situation. |
They tell you how to drive, and it's not their car? Are you driving a train? That type of engineer? Go ahead, throw more insults, but I'm not the one driving like a jackass. |
Not PP but I think this is the answer. Same reason the fire trucks always back into the station. |
You need help. -np |
+1. This is very common in the oil and gas world. I had a client in TX who not only required it on company business but also in all company lots no matter who you were. They had some pull-through spots for visitors but even those had arrows indicating which way to exit. |

I back in, especially this time of year when it's busy, so I can get out more easily. It doesn't take me long time, first try (native New Yorker, I can drive/park anywhere, no dings).. I promise you, no one backs in to aggravate you. No one is even thinking about you when they are parking.
What bothers me is the people who sit in the middle of a lane waiting to turn into a spot. No one can get around them on either side, while they're waiting for someone to put their groceries in the car, or whatever. Think Costco/Gaithersburg. Last weekend this happened to me (people waiting in their lane, but on BOTH sides, no one could get by on either side for over 10 minutes, and once someone pulls up behind you, you are completely trapped.) My solution: I will not be stepping foot in a shopping mall, or Costco, until sometime in mid-January! By then, the selfish, crazy, impatient drivers will have survived the holidays, and things can get hack to normal! |
I pull through at times, but I think it is probably a risky move in parking lots, someone you can't see because of the SUV next to the space yo're pulling into about to drive into the same space you are pulling ahead to. I have heard driver tests now require a person be able to back into a space. And I think that backing in can be an issue during busy, crowded times. |
| I never backed into spots until I became a cop. My husband thinks it's nuts but I do it at work and it just becomes second-nature at home. |
+1. I back in 100% every time. And I can do it in one motion. |
| As a person of non blackness, I don't black into parking spaces. The person claiming an "extra 3 seconds" needs to get on the school bus to kindergarten tomorrow to learn how to tell time. |
| I back because the visibility is better when I'm pull out to leave. It doesn't bother me to wait for others to do it, but it amuses me that people are all worked up about it. |
Cuz you're an a hole. |

AAA recommends backing in.
