Wow, 4 posts in a row against putting up a sign? I see no evidence that people who are activists are worse in their personal lives than people who aren't. Sure some should do more for those close to them, but isn't that true of all kinds of people? Seems like someone is trying to silence views they don't agree with.
And didn't OP say they live in a city neighborhood, presumably one that does have crime? Why does anyone think people who put up these signs have no experience with crime? And why think they don't care about cops? You can care about cops and still not excuse everything cops do. |
| The BLM is a fringe group and offensive to many. They dropped the ball by not going with ALM. No doubt there's some WLM group out there somewhere. Either way yard signs imo is tacky. We get along with all our neighbors but leave politics out of it. OP that would be your best avenue. I give to 3 animals charities but don't feel the need to put signs up about it. |
Their point was that black lives are often treated as not mattering. They have been very effective in getting attention focused on how blacks are treated by police in many areas. There will always be SOME people offended by anything you say. I use my own judgement to determine if its offensive. I don't think many people who have thought seriously about the matter find a BLM sign offensive. And no, yard signs are not tacky IMO. |
BLM is the modern Black Panther party..... so no I am not putting up a sign that supports that. |
Way to completely miss the point! |
Agree. |

No, it is not. |
I posted earlier at 8:15. I don't necessarily think activists are worse than other people. It's like people that want to tell you about how religious they are to presumably establish credibility. I am just suspicious of them. I don't think anyone is trying to silence her. Some people were just relaying their experiences to give the OP something to think about. Regarding crime, living in NW DC is vastly different than living in an impoverished, high crime area like SE DC. It's highly likely that OP doesn't have experience doing a thankless job that is inherently adversarial and danegerous. You are constantly dealing with a small segment of the population that commits a disgusting number of violent crimes and disproportionately assaults and kills police officers. BLM supporters know nothing about use of force and don't seem to understand that in many of these situations you have literally no time to even think about how to respond because they happen so fast. If you knew anyone who was a cop in the 70's or early 80's, you would know that law enforcement has changed for the better in many ways. Watching a few cherry picked videos over and over again is pointless. Cops will always make mistakes. I see them screw up and shoot (not real ammo) the wrong person in training all the time. But if you make a mistake in real life, you are a racist goon. There is a reason why cops generally don't judge each other, and that is because they know that it could be them who is the one making the mistake. Maybe BLM could learn a lesson from those cops. |

It is obvious that the OP has already chosen her "team" .
Once they chose a team (ideology), it's unlikely they will seek out opposing views or facts. |
| Why do white people have the black lives matter signs in our north portland neighborhood ? They have the sign but when you speak to them they dont even day hi to you. So that lets me know it is for show only and thats it. |
| Yard signs are tacky. |
| Do Asian/South Asian people put up these signs, too? What about hispanics? Don't these people care, too??!!! Lol |
I think the poster's objection was to the belief that white neighbors would "improve" things. |
