My early teen DD was using my Youtube account on my phone to look up some Algebra help videos for several days early this year when we were away from home. She also looked up how to make some bracelets and a few some art videos, suddenly the next day I have Cooney's video suggested to me as something I may like. When I first saw her, I thought she was dying of cancer. Normally my feed is filled with lectures and subjects I like.
Why is looking up things that young girls would like, triggering a suggestion by the algorithm that I may like Cooney's videos?
I know the answer. The platforms are more than willing to allow her as long as she makes them money.
I agree with you and you know what’s crazy? My kid started using my and my husbands YouTube accounts for looking up gaming videos (Minecraft and Roblox mostly and a mobile game that he sometimes plays as well), chess stuff, kids educational type videos about the solar system and weather - just really average elementary school boy interests. And he started being recommended videos from fairly far right figures like Ben Shapiro and Praeger U on our accounts. Neither my husband nor myself would watch that and my kid has never shown any interest in politics or news or really anything beyond games and kids stuff. It’s weird because it goes away and then it comes back. So videos glamorizing eating disorders must be the equivalent for girls.
