This is the mentality of a lot of you Americans... that you'll never need to speak another language.
How ridiculous is that?

You may not need to speak another language but knowledge, cultural experience doesn't hurt.

Keep going like this and I'll keep lauging at Amerincans suffering walking around a shopping mall in South America with empty hands because they can't speak the local language.

This is not the mentality of all Americans. I have no hispanic heritage whatsoever and I speak Spanish (greatly aided by inlaws who only spoke limited English). I am happy I know another language.

HOWEVER, you make the point yourself that when you are in a country, you need to speak the local language. It's clear you do. But there are plenty of nannies who do not. They live here, they take care of children, and they do not speak English. Are you laughing a little at them too?

you pay a lot of money for "cheap crap" from us up here.

and the interest in learning a new language should come because you seek knowledge, culture... and now because you're stupid capitalist who wants to work like a crazy, leave your child with a stupid "not american" and spend all your money in cheap crap.

I am a SAHM so no one is watching my child other than myself.

I speak German and DH is teaching me Hebrew.

I do not spend my money on cheap crap.

Stop attacking Americans. It makes it easy to attack you.

Just an FYI to help you out a little, your posts make little to no sense, but I will give you it is probably the language barrier.

I knew a Candi Cane. When she got older she used her full first name - Candace.

Practically speaking most Americans can go through their entire lives without speaking another language. While many take second languages in middle and high school they don't really get an opportunity to use it. I was so excited to go to France when I was 14 and use the French I had learned. I wasn't very confident at first and everyone there would just start speaking English! English is a very common language in Europe and elsewhere. In europe you really need to speak english if you are in business, politics or other professional trades.

I feel sorry for them because you Americans hire them and you don't tell them that your local church/library has FREE english classes for them.
You don't spend time with them to teach them so DON'T BLAME ON THEM.

yes, but if you're a consultant for coca-cola and you go to visit the biggest factory coca has in south america you'll be in the middle of nowhere where nobody speaks english.
you'll wonder in a mall trying to buy gifts for family/friends, try to buy a new suitcase because yours is broke and you'll do gesture and try to point to stuff to buy things since in the entire mall just one person speaks english. YOU.

yeah, that happened to me. I was a sales person in a store in a mall and an American guy (working for coca-cola) came to me DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH? I said in my poor english JUST A LITTLE
he yeled THANK YOU GOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDD because he walked the entire mall trying to buy gifts and a suitcase and nobody could understand him.

I helped him around and got a great opportunity to practice my bad english.

If he knew at least a little Spanish people there would try to understand him but he didn't bother to find out wich language we spoke and try to learn the basics before traveling there.

... oh well... let me go back to my meditation...

OOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

I would not employ a non-english speaking employee, some English would be required but tell me why it is my responsibility to spend time with them to teach them English? It is not my place to send them to a church for classes either. That is THEIR responsibilty.
