Although I respect the cultures of Brazil and India I have to say you are a nutball. My ex was from Brazil (Recife) and we lived together before marraige as did his sister and her husband. Not all families follow culture to a T. Whay happens in other countries, although it may be sad or odd, is not something I consider when deciding whether or not to throw an education at a non-english speaking person. If coming to America was their choice, then they are personally responsible for learning the language is THEY DECIDE TO DO SO. It is not my responsibility.

So.... go take a prozac OR be proactive and join a Church group that helps teach people other languages if it is so important to you. If you really feel Americans are ignorant and "freacking" crazy then by all means leave the US and go home. I am glad you are here but you seem to have too many issues with this wonderful country.

I'm still here because not everybody is like you.

The American hating nanny or whoever she is . . . sorry, your argument is illogical and just stupid. Comparing grown adults in a free democracy who can CHOOSE to not "be kept down" to toddlers needing their parents to teach them the ABCs is ridiculous. Not to mention the hysterical tone of your posts. If we are all so bad, there is an easy solution to your problem (since the harder ones don't appeal to you) and that is to leave.

I don't care for rhyming first and last names: Nick Stich. Yes, it's a real name.

You forgot Adolf and the name of the man who kidnapped and raped his daughter for 24 years and fathered her 7 kids.

Fanny Whiffer! I can't stop laughing!

I went to school with a girl named Penny Economy. And I had an Aunt Dorcas.

I once knew a woman named Dorcas too. Dorcas DevenDorff.

Dorcas is a name found in the bible.
Hebrews used to name their children based on how they looked like or based on what the parents wished for their future.

If you knew who the biblical Dorcas was you would be ashamed of making fun of her name.

There was a "Nimrod" at my grad school. I think he was Israeli? Is that also from the Old Testament? I wonder how the names evolve or devolve into modern day definitions. Dorcas. Nimrod.

It's the misalignments between first and last names that really get me, a la:

Seamus Goldstein, Taylor Weinberg. Oy. Jayden Levine.

To my fellow Heebs: do yourselves a favor and stop putting British or Celtic names with the Tribal last names. They really don't work.

It really amuses me that only some ethnic names are desirable. I've never met a Tyrone Schwartz or a Sung Eun Feldman. Or for that matter, a Yankel McCormick or Shoshannah Hunt.

I suppose there's a first time for everything, though.

My DH and I are friendly with an older hippy couple who live in Adams Morgan-named their son Alfalfa Falafel Hemp-funny thing is their last name is Falwell. You know that kids' going to have a fun time in high school. Funny thing, they named a subsequent daughter Mary-go figure.

I agree with 16:29. Names that make me laugh are those that scream "intermarriage" or "parents couldn't agree."

16:36 here-both parents are Anglo Saxon vegetarians and are the type of couple who say they never "fight" over anything-DH and I love them dearly but this "we never fight" thing wants to make both of us throw up. In fact, when DH are having an argument, one of us brings this couple up and we both fall into bed laughing. PS-are kids are named Josh and Emily-you guess the sexes.

PS-meant to say our not are-don't think I don't know what kind of trouble you can get into around here over spelling.
