Membership at Chevy Chase Club

Also, when I was growing up and friends’ families belonged there it was a good source of activities and a social life for the kids and teens. So, that is the plus side. People there are extremely conservative, and as far as I could hear politics are constantly discussed, even on the tennis courts and ice rink. If you are even a moderate Republican, it would be awkward.

Been there as a guest many times. The family that hosts me and the friends we’ve met are democrats.

Whole family seems to enjoy it. The adult children said they enjoyed the activities available - swimming, tennis, ice skating, parties meal etc.

I'm not a member of the club, but I grew up playing in the Capital Beltway Hockey League. The club always iced a team, and I played there several times. It's one of the region's handful of outdoor rinks. My only memory: Grabbing the puck in the defensive zone, chipping it up the ice and looking at the balcony on the follow through at an imperious-looking mother staring at me while sipping a glass of red wine in a fur coat. I immediately hated her and decided that I disliked the club. A friend of mine on another team also broke his leg at the club after he skated over a leaf that has fallen onto the ice — thanks to the outdoor rink — and he awkwardly to the ice. So... yeah. It's a beautiful place, but like many beautiful places there's an underbelly. I generally suggest avoiding high concentrations of rich people. It's rarely a good experience.

A leaf that accidentally blew onto the ice is... an underbelly? A mom in a fur coat with a drink is an underbelly? This is a weird post even by DCUM standards.

If anyone has any insight into the process, current dues & fees, etc., it would be appreciated. We would be interested in the pool / social (not golf) membership, and we are a married couple under 35 (I've heard some clubs give discounted membership rates to younger couples).

Thanks!

If you have to ask. You're not eligible. A member, or members, have to nominate you for membership and you asking a member to sponsor you is simply not done. CCCC is for old Washingtonians and legacy memberships, government dignitaries, e.g. US Senators, cabinet members.

Let’s not hype it up too much - new members are friends with current members and have the money/interest to join. That’s it.

This. My friends are members and they are just regular successful lawyers with 1-2 generation money and no name.

+1 and Jewish, too

What was your motivation to search for Chevy Chase club, resurrect this thread, and then complain about the underbelly of a slippery leaf?

We have 3 kids at Cathedral schools and half their friends (and ours at school) are members. I spend a good deal of my life dropping off my kids there. We have good (20 year) friends who I'm sure would sponsor us if asked and I could come up with 14 additional names fairly easily (people whose homes we've been to, etc).
Is there a current wait? I don't think I'm really interested but I've grown a little curious.

A few things:
Are you Jewish? You won’t get in unless you are Republican and even Jewish applicants have a very low percentage of being admitted.

I have heard from creditable sources that a few families in current senior class at STA were involved with blackballing not one but TWO fellow Jewish families.

Lastly it has a reputation of being the least inclusive and kind club and others such as Congressional are more prestigious but have a more open vibe.

Fellow families who were Jewish or a couple Jewish families screwed over other Jewish families?

No. I believe it was some non Jewish members who are also (STA families ) members screwed over some fellow STA Jewish families.

Right? Talk about an axe to grind.

Or a burgeoning author. Tell us more about this imperious woman. Let's call her Jacqueline. She always knows who the visiting team is because they "don't go here". She secretly laughs when they try to buy items without a member number. And when the other visiting boy broke his leg, nobody would move their mercedeseses to let the ambulance through.

If there was a fanfic of the complaint post, it would be from a leaf's eye view.

parents in the senior class at STA “screwing over” other STA families is sad

A few notes for the author:
1. Is an outdoor rink a good thing or a bad thing? You seem conflicted - you need to resolve this as it is driving two major parts of the narrative: why you were there and why the leaf was there.

2. What sort of leaf was it? How does it relate to the underbelly? Was it placed there to sabotage the other team? You need to add some dimensions here to build the story arc.

Some great responses here re leaf. But getting back to the important stuff. We have friends who have suggested they'd sponsor us and I'd like to be prepared for when it comes up again. What is the actual initiation fee and when is it due? Have heard mixed things and though we could afford the numbers I've seen, $150k is a different cost/benefit analysis than $100k. And what is the current wait time? I feel like I see people getting in a few years after applying, but maybe I'm missing something. Yes, we know we can/will discuss this with our sponsors, but having some answers ahead of time helps with the conversation.

I think you could just call the office and ask these questions. Say a friend who is a member brought it up and you’d like to find out more. It’s not a secret society.
