I don't believe this. Every school is by definition unique. Prep is hardly unique in filling a "Catholic niche" given the existence of Gonzaga, which is also Jesuit, the Heights, which is also suburban, St. Anselms, which also has a great academic reputation, and St. Johns, not to mention Paul VI and the various diocesan schools such as Good Counsel, Ireton, and O'Connell. Maybe most Prep boys don't apply top STA or Landon b/c their families prefer Catholic schools (although I know one boy who applied to both Prep and Landon), but I would be very surprised if all of those families who want a Catholic education for their sons are willing to put all their eggs in one basket and end up at public if their son is not admitted. |
Yes, for sheer academic ability (rather than athlete-scholar or great athlete or any other specific talent), St. Anselm's. Also has very few spaces for 9th grade. |
I have no dog in this debate. Sorry to break it to you, but Landon is far less selective than Prep. I know a half dozen or more who got negged at Prep and had to go to Landon. St. Albans definitely top. Sidwell too, but you're kidding yourself if you lump Landon with them and really smoking something if you infer that Landon is in any way superior to GP. |
|
Sorry to break to you Landon hater but Landon and Prep are virtually identical when it comes to SAT scores, merit scores etc.
SAT Landon - 1289 GP - 1292 Merit Landon 3.64% GP - 3.56% Presidential Scholars Landon - .61 GP - 0 Diversity Landon - 36% GP - 39% http://fwd4.me/Jes This link and many other stats are under the FAQ for private school admissions. |
I stand corrected. I meant that it is not the case that prep. boys applied but were rejected from the big 3. You are right, they probably also apply to a few of the other catholic boys schools. But that said, are you suggesting that prep. boys go to prep. bc they have been rejected from any of the schools you mention above. I don't think so. |
Prep has had at least two presidential scholars in recent years. Definitely had one this year |
I think those presidential scholar numbers are median percentages of the class size as candidates over several years. Not only are those percentages almost identical, but if you look behind the numbers, the raw numbers for the two schools are pretty identical too. Both are strong schools. There's no need to knock either. Total presidential scholar candidates 2003-10 GP: 5 Landon: 5 Total presidential scholar semifinalists 2003-10 GP: 2 Landon: 4 Total presidential scholar winners 1980-2010 GP: 1 Landon: 3 |
They're both exceptional schools, but any one who thinks prep is even half a notch lower than landon is out of their minds. They are probably the most comparable schools in the iac, if not the entire area. |

I am very close to GP admissions and academics. There are alot of comments flying around on this web site. Here are some facts:
1. There are definitely trolls lurking here per an earlier post regarding lots of students allegedly leaving the school (there are trolls on any good school thread on this board - it is human nature for people to try and tear down others at the top). Nothing could be further from the truth. Like other good schools, families are lining up to try to get into Prep. Once in, most usually stay. Those that leave are usually because they can't cut it academically or culturally feel out of place. Again, like any good school, this happens to a few families each year. The schools remains a top academic institution and has the academic program and variety to challenge the best of studuents. 2. The are very selective with who they admit. To suggest that Landon is superior in this regard is ridiculous. A very prominent example is the Huguely kid. He went to Mater Dei, traditionally a feeder school for Prep. He was denied acceptance there and was accepted at Prep. This is related to non-academic considerations. That said, both school are comparable from an academic results standpoint. It has nothing to do with their non-academic philosophies and the schools are completely different in that regard. 3. I will not attempt to debate big three here. But both GP and Landon (whether you like it or not) as well, are clearly in the top 10 academically in the area. |

Meant to say in my previous post, "and was accepted at Landon". Sorry for the error.

|
How the hell do you know if Huguely was denied admission at prep?!
This is confidential information and if you are not a troll and actually "very close" to admissions you would know you cannot say divulge that kind of info. Your whole post screams of Prep boosterism once again. |
| Agree pp -- Prep and Landon both wanted GH for his athletic abilities in football and lacrosse. |
| Yep and he chose to go to Landon. |
Absolutely not. Get mad all you want. I was advised by a Landon parent of this. It is a recently well known piece of information amongst the community, given the tragedy. |
| I know several families whose kids were rejected at prep and had to go to landon. A very sore subject around catholics who were in that boat. |
