H1b visas. Anyone else work in technology and see the issues with this program and outsourcing?

According to the 2017 NFAP policy brief analyzing the 2016 cohort of the top 40 competitors:

Overall Immigrant Parents: 83% of the top 40 scholars (33 individuals) had at least one immigrant parent.
H-1B Visas: 75% (30 of 40) had parents who worked in the United States on H-1B visas.

International Students: 68% (27 of 40) had a parent who initially came to the U.S. as an international student and later obtained H-1B status.

Got something more current??

Let’s deal in facts AND current , something immigration proponents seem unable to do.

Computer science college seniors in the United States outperform peers in China, India and Russia, new research says
U.S. undergraduate programs appear to produce more skilled computer science students on average, according to Stanford-led research.

“ There is this sense in the public that the high quality of STEM programs in the United States is driven by its international students,” Loyalka said. “Our data show that’s not the case. The results hold if we only consider domestic students in the U.S.”

So no skills shortage and US students are superior

Where are the democrats fighting for US workers??

Why are the broligarchs who run these companies throwing millions and millions at Trump and MAGA? 🤔

That’s a better question. And it’s laughable that you think union busters like Trump and Vance are fighting for US workers.

we KNOW that. Republicans are evil.

But why have Democrats joined Republicans and in many situations are WORSE because of how they advocate for more and more overwhelming immigration on the backs of US workers.

Democrats used to be the party of labor.

Where are Democrats clamoring for more H1Bs? Post links.

We've seen that one before. Remember Biden when they asked what his policy was. "Trust me I'm not Trump" Then he spent more time undoing Trump's EO than anything else. They tried to pass amnesty through reconciliation numerous times. They repeatedly tried to give away green cards in the Chips Act.

Mum isn't good enough for Democrats anymore.

They have to make their policy clear, and by clear they need to actually do something. They have levers they can pull, but right now the Republican states are the ones doing it. Florida and Texas restricted H-1B in public schools.

Why haven't Democrat states that claim to be anti-H-1b done that?

Democratic states are suing the federal government to allow MORE h1bs for public universities

In what planet does a party that wants to help workers actively pushes to replace workers with cheap foreign labor???

More hysterical MAGA screeching.
Trump has been in office for well over a year. If this is such a great priority why hasn’t he done anything about H1Bs? He seems to have plenty of time to hold rallies, play golf and start wars.

We've seen token legislative initiatives from the Democrats, but what are they doing in the jurisdictions they control, eg the cities and states. Do they have any actions they point to that show that they are actively reigning in their historically pro-immigration stance? So far only thing that has been on the new is Minneapolis.

What has the GOP done? Absolutely nothing. Do you even know which party controls all 3 levers of government?

Not enough but …

Trump tightened standards for skilled-worker visas, especially the H-1B visa program.

* Increased denial rates.
* Narrowed the definition of “specialty occupation.”
* Proposed rules favoring higher-paid applicants.
* In his second term, imposed a controversial $100,000 fee on many new H-1B petitions.

Also ,Trump backed legislation like the RAISE Act, which would have sharply reduced legal immigration by cutting family-sponsored green cards and ending the diversity visa lottery. While Congress did not pass it, the proposal made his goals clear.

His administration also increased scrutiny and processing times for green card applications, resulting in more requests for evidence, denials, and delays.

In addition …

One of the biggest changes was the “public charge” rule. It expanded the criteria for denying green cards or visas to applicants who were deemed likely to use public benefits such as Medicaid, SNAP, or housing assistance. This affected many family-based immigrants. Courts later blocked or overturned much of this policy.

Meanwhile Democrats that advocate for favoring US workers over h1bs -> NONE

Not a single democrat is helping

No US developer should ever vote Democrat

The next generation deserves more than broken promises and outsourced dreams.

They deserve a fair shot to work, build, and thrive in the nation they call home.

I'm leading S. 2821 – the "American Tech Workforce Act" to end the H-1B scam and put hardworking Americans first.

Not a single REPUBLICAN has co-sponsored Banks' bill.

Democrats do support measures to protect American STEM graduates and curb H‑1B abuses, but their approach focuses on raising wage standards, tightening oversight, and preventing outsourcing rather than eliminating the programs outright.

Democrats have repeatedly backed bipartisan H‑1B and L‑1 reform efforts, most notably through the Grassley–Durbin H‑1B and L‑1 Visa Reform Act, where Sen. Dick Durbin (D‑IL) serves as the lead Democratic architect. That bill would raise H‑1B wages, crack down on outsourcing firms, require good‑faith recruitment of U.S. workers, and increase transparency, all aimed at stopping companies from using visas to undercut domestic tech labor.

Durbin and Grassley have also pressed major tech companies about layoffs alongside heavy H‑1B usage, questioning whether firms are genuinely prioritizing American workers. These actions show that Democrats are not opposed to protecting U.S. tech workers; they simply favor reform and enforcement over sweeping outright elimination of programs like H‑1B or OPT. Their strategy centers on closing loopholes, raising wage floors, and preventing displacement, rather than ending pathways used by universities, research institutions, and high‑skill employers.

I’m not in tech but I’m tech adjacent at my co- not a big tech company but one, like so many today, that depends heavily on technology in the creation of its core products - and it is a shit show. Truly. And for every h1b who I think is bringing a lot to the table at work, there are 3 who are mediocre.

Several posters throughout this thread have repeatedly shown examples of how Democrats are trying to fix the H1-B abuse problem. You ignored a post referencing Durbin spearheading a bipartisan bill posted earlier this morning.

Check your own reading comprehension.

Meanwhile back in the real world, not the circle jerk you imagine, ….

From 2020-2025, the @universityofky has filed for over 800 H1B labor condition applications.

Instead of hiring qualified Kentuckians or Americans, it’s hiring foreigners.

UK receives over $619 million dollars in state and federal taxpayer funding annually.

If the university isn’t able to educate and train Americans for these positions, it should NOT be receiving any tax benefits or taxpayer funding.

Democrats are suing to KEEP this abuse intact .

They must really think workers are stupid

Using raw LCA numbers causes some distortion. Those numbers include renewals, amendments, filings that never result in employment and so on. The real number is likely significantly smaller. But yes, they should be hiring Kentuckians first.

That said there also aren't enough US PhD grads in some areas to fill those positions. We need to be incentivizing graduate and postdoctoral study for US citizens in high-demand fields.

Seems if the university is unable to train people they should get nothing and be on their own

H-1B don't want to do PhD or postdoc either. They just want a visa and green card. Many continue to register in the work visa lotteries until they get an h-1b so they can leave academia. This is very common for F1s.
