No, that part of the neighborhood goes to Navy which is going to go to Oakton. I think the better solution would be to send those 100 houses to Crossfield which is under capacity and then to Carson-Western, but for whatever reason they stay at Navy.

They should go to crossfield and Western. I thought that they were going to get moved out of Navy. It doesn't make sense for them to to go Navy since the houses just below them go to crossfield and those are technically closer to Navy. Most of these pro-Oakton parents should barely be affected as many of them have older kids anyway. As previously stated, they are a very loud and vocal group. The same group that made all the noise about the affordable housing that was supposed to be built, probably because they are a little racist and elitist.

Maybe because they were going to put an access road off their cul-de-sac had something to do with their objections? I don't find that racist or elitist. Cutting down tons of trees behind their houses? Causing more traffic on the small road by the day care centers?
And, yes, the plan did include putting an access road off a real cul-de-sac.

And, I don't live in Franklin Farm.

But, I'm trying to figure out this Navy cutout. I've mentioned before that Franklin Farm originally went to Oak Hill. Then, when Crossfield was built, this section lobbied to stay at Oak Hill. (I was told this by someone who was here at that time.)At that time, there was no FFX County Parkway and that area of Franklin Farm was very close to Oak Hill. Franklin Farm on the other side of the parkway is still at Oak Hill, so it likely was not a big deal for them to stay there.
Then, Oak Hill became crowded and they were sent to Navy. I'm not positive this is the whole story, but it makes sense. It no longer makes sense for them to be at Navy. I am also guessing that at that time, this area was the closest to Thompson Rd and could access Navy the back way.

What? No. I grew up off Nestlewood. When Crossfield was built and opened in 1988, I went there, as did my siblings and all of my neighbors.

Then, you should be able to help us out. How/when did this happen. It has been that way for a very, very long time.

Was your street in what is now the Navy Island?

Who the heck knows. They probably won’t have any new info and it will just be a complaint session. If I understand correctly Reid said last night there will be a version of a map that doesn’t include anyone from South Lakes or Oakton. I don’t even understand how you fill the school that way. That would seem to require a ton of backfilling of space opened up in Chantilly/Centreville/Westfield by moving kids out of only those schools.

Lee's Corner? Chantilly kids.
Doesn't make much sense. It would split them up because some live right across from Chantilly.

If they don't touch South Lakes or Oakton, then Carson will still be a three way split.

That will be a really bad outcome.

SLHS and Oakton won’t get any relief while Westfield loses more than 1000 kids to KAA. Carson will still be a three way split and Floris a two way split.

But I heard some Fox Mill parents want to stay in SLHS and given some Crossfield parents are very vocal against the move, Reid may come up with a crazy map.

Franklin Farm -> Western to give Oakton some relief and cut their commute to a third of what it is.

You should've heard the lady from Crossfield at last nights meeting that kept going on and on about staying at Oakton. I thought at some point they would cut her off but they let her finish.

I was't there, but it's ridiculous. There is no Oakton community before the kids get to high school. It's not like we go shopping in Oakton or have activities in Oakton. It's not like we go to Oakton block parties. My kids don't know a single person that goes to any school zoned to Oakton other than the ones that went to Navy for AAP. All their sports, activity, and camp friends are going to go to Chantilly and Westfield, and a lot of those kids will go to Western.

Not to mention that if the sports moms have their way, our kids will literally be the ONLY ones at Carson that go to Oakton once the Navy AAP kids are shifted back to Franklin. That's just horrible. I can't believe they want this for their children, I can't believe they prioritize athletics over their children's social and emotional well being.

They will have more opportunities for athletics at Western and it will be easier to make teams and it has a pool so if the kids do swim it's a no brainer, not having to shuttle them around to oak marr. I don't know what their problem is. Like the pp said, there is no Oakton community before they go to HS.

Yes. Please spill. Several posts about her, but nothing about what she actually said. Wonder if she will sign up to speak to the School Board.

100%. Thank you. I don't know what these people are talking about with their "Oakton community" nonsense. It does not exist before high school. I literally never set foot in Oakton. There is no reason to do so. It's a bunch of BS. If your kid currently attends Oakton HS, by all means let them stay for continuity. I understand having started to build a community around high school peers and activities. But if you are in middle school or younger? You are full of it saying your community is Oakton unless you are part of a very specific sport or two. Which you chose to do outside of your actual community. Same way plenty of our kids who do travel sports don't play on teams with kids they don't go to school with. That's how it works. Stop lying that you are part of some community with Navy and Waples Mill kids. Kids who actually go to Navy don't even say that. It's a bunch of lies.

*editing my double negative and bad grammar... kids in travel sports don't play on teams with kids with whom they go to school.

Anonymous wrote:So what are they going to propose on Saturday?

These are tweaks that I can think of that they may make to the Drafty Draft Options:

Option A: Move the small pocket of Floris from SLHS to KAA

pros: Floris won't be split feeder, SLHS will get some relief.
cons: Fox Mill will be the only school going to SLHS from Carson

Option B: Move Franklin Farm west of 286 from Oakton to KAA

pros: Oakton will get some relief. Will satisfy most Crossfield parents which appear to be very torn.
cons: Crossfield will become three way split

Option C&D: Move Fox Mill Woods from KAA to SLHS

pros: Will satisfy Fox Mill Woods parents. KAA will be close to 2000.

Or are they coming up with a completely new map?

There's nothing west of 286 that goes to Crossfield. "Most" Crossfield parents don't want to stay at Oakton. I would say most Crossfield parents are ambivalent or hoping to move to the new school. It's just some loud ones that want to move.

As a fellow crossfield/navy parent i agree with her. If other areas are overburdened then prioritize moving them to the western hs.

You agree with the poster or the Oakton speaker?

Oakton speaker.

Dr Reid was throwing out numbers listing that 2 high schools were 120% and 130% over capacity (Centerville and Chantilly as I recall, but a quick search seems to put them right under 120%), which I had no idea was the case. I believe after the rennovations Oakton isn't nearly as high. I did a quick search and as of may it was at 98%.

Sounds like those other 2 schools need serious triage, so moving kids to the western highschool would be the smarter idea than moving kids from an undercapacity school. Thats more or less what the crossfield speaker's point was.

That's not the experience in my neighborhood. Most paid serious coin for access to Oakton, though there is a small minority who wanted south lakes access due to the south asian community there.

Please write this to the Board Members and Dr. Reid. I did, and I talked about MY community being in Oak Hill, but I'm not willing to stand up in a meeting and say it out loud because I don't want my child suddenly dropped from her friend group over this.

Oh please, I have what is now a $1.5M house that I paid $750K for. That's not "serious bank".
