Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

Who the heck knows. They probably won’t have any new info and it will just be a complaint session. If I understand correctly Reid said last night there will be a version of a map that doesn’t include anyone from South Lakes or Oakton. I don’t even understand how you fill the school that way. That would seem to require a ton of backfilling of space opened up in Chantilly/Centreville/Westfield by moving kids out of only those schools.

Lee's Corner? Chantilly kids.
Doesn't make much sense. It would split them up because some live right across from Chantilly.

If they don't touch South Lakes or Oakton, then Carson will still be a three way split.

That will be a really bad outcome.

SLHS and Oakton won’t get any relief while Westfield loses more than 1000 kids to KAA. Carson will still be a three way split and Floris a two way split.

But I heard some Fox Mill parents want to stay in SLHS and given some Crossfield parents are very vocal against the move, Reid may come up with a crazy map.

This is how I think the process will unfold. People with strong opinions will contact the board members, and that will strongly influence their votes.

If Fox Mill parents don’t communicate, then maybe Option A is the way to go.

If vocal Crossfield parents mobilize and campaign against the move, then Option B will be likely.

If Discovery Square people stay quiet, the board may choose between Options C and D.

Option b takes too many from south lakes

Franklin Farm -> Western to give Oakton some relief and cut their commute to a third of what it is.

You should've heard the lady from Crossfield at last nights meeting that kept going on and on about staying at Oakton. I thought at some point they would cut her off but they let her finish.

We are in this area but don't have HS aged kids currently. I welcome the opportunity for a new, closer high school. I know it's hard to make some of the sports teams at Oakton, swim (has a pool), basketball, etc so I would be excited for my kids to eventually go to this new school. I hope the Oakton blowhards don't have their way and the decision makers listen to future high school families as well, although people like me are not going to be that vocal. This lady you speak of probably is uninformed and has older kids and doesn't realize that they won't be affected. Maybe they care about property value? But I don't think it will affect it.

We are in the same boat and feel the same way. Please contact Seema Dixit and the at large School Board members to emphasize the importance of long term planning and alignment with one of their stated goals of reducing transportation times. You can even advocate for high schoolers to get to stay put. Don’t just let the loudest people’s voices be heard. Calls and emails matter just as much as speeches at meetings. Everyone deserves an equal chance at being represented. We all pay taxes.

Going to also add that there was ways to still send your kids to Oakton. For instance, your kid can take a language not offered at Western but is offered at Oakton.

Arguing on DCUM can be interesting and informative. But, your School Board members get the final say.

Ms. Dixit has been very responsive. My friend got a quick reply as well and her issue was escalated.

No, that part of the neighborhood goes to Navy which is going to go to Oakton. I think the better solution would be to send those 100 houses to Crossfield which is under capacity and then to Carson-Western, but for whatever reason they stay at Navy.

They should go to crossfield and Western. I thought that they were going to get moved out of Navy. It doesn't make sense for them to to go Navy since the houses just below them go to crossfield and those are technically closer to Navy. Most of these pro-Oakton parents should barely be affected as many of them have older kids anyway. As previously stated, they are a very loud and vocal group. The same group that made all the noise about the affordable housing that was supposed to be built, probably because they are a little racist and elitist.

Maybe because they were going to put an access road off their cul-de-sac had something to do with their objections? I don't find that racist or elitist. Cutting down tons of trees behind their houses? Causing more traffic on the small road by the day care centers?
And, yes, the plan did include putting an access road off a real cul-de-sac.

And, I don't live in Franklin Farm.

But, I'm trying to figure out this Navy cutout. I've mentioned before that Franklin Farm originally went to Oak Hill. Then, when Crossfield was built, this section lobbied to stay at Oak Hill. (I was told this by someone who was here at that time.)At that time, there was no FFX County Parkway and that area of Franklin Farm was very close to Oak Hill. Franklin Farm on the other side of the parkway is still at Oak Hill, so it likely was not a big deal for them to stay there.
Then, Oak Hill became crowded and they were sent to Navy. I'm not positive this is the whole story, but it makes sense. It no longer makes sense for them to be at Navy. I am also guessing that at that time, this area was the closest to Thompson Rd and could access Navy the back way.

What? No. I grew up off Nestlewood. When Crossfield was built and opened in 1988, I went there, as did my siblings and all of my neighbors.

Then, you should be able to help us out. How/when did this happen. It has been that way for a very, very long time.

My youngest sibling graduated from Oakton in 2000, and my parents moved not long after that, so I'm not sure when the elementary move to Navy occurred. It was definitely after my youngest sibling fnished elementary school. After Crossfield opened, the three of us went to Crossfield, Franklin, and Oakton.

As a fellow crossfield/navy parent i agree with her. If other areas are overburdened then prioritize moving them to the western hs.
