Most European immigrants that came over prior to 1930 were not highly educated or skilled either. We’ve done this every 60 years or so - complain about current wave of immigrants without recognizing our own. Poor British came. Then they complained about the poor Scottish. They they complained about the poor Irish who came in the 1880s. Then their children complained about the poor Italians and Polish. And the complaints about the Jews fleeing Russia. Then the children of all those groups complained about the Chinese and Japanese. Then the Mexicans. It goes on and on and on. Anyone claiming their highly educated family came in 1880 is either lying or ignorant or cherry picking data. |

+1. Huddled and unwashed masses. I heard a comedian remark that they weren’t sending their best. Part of my family came very early in this country’s history. Of course it was to Georgia which was some sort of debtor’s penal colony at the time. The rest all came through other immigrant booms and they were poor as dirt and it’s a very “colorful” history with a lot of problem children that some documenter of my family’s history was very open about. Assimilation takes generations, and it’s foolish to claim our country hasn’t been shaped and formed by the past immigrant waves. Immigration has often been an ugly and unwelcoming affair, MAGA has dialed it up several notches. |

What does that even mean? There is absolutely nothing in the OT or NT about, say, representative democracy. Political leaders are set above the people by God. Plus, that would even include requiring them to care for the poor, the widowed and orphaned, the ill or disabled, even the criminals (Matthew 25:36-40). And if we are supposed to represent those values when determining their admissibility then we shouldn't reject those who might become a public charge. Also, the Holy Spirit caused apostles to speak in the language of those listening, it didn't require the listeners to learn the apostles' language. Even that business about the 10 commandments. The first three are orders to recognize God and observe the Sabbath. We got rid of that with the Bill of Rights. Nobody says we can't covet, we just can't commit a criminal or civil offense to get what we covet--thoughts are not crimes. The punishable crimes were crimes long before the 10 commandments. Plus, the 10 commandments, and Jesus' commandments to love God and your neighbor, are not part of our political system, are presented as handed down from God, not as the laws created in the light of reason. Plus, the early Christians had all goods in common (later reflected in convents and monasteries where personal property was surrendered to the religious community). Spare me this Judeo-Christian values business. It comes from that notion that unless they believe in God, humans are incapable of knowing how to live among each other and have any morals or ethics. Don't forget that Thomas Jefferson snipped out much of the New Testament to keep just what he considered consistent with his views on morals and ethics. |

Perhaps we can have a spelling/grammar/punctuation test and for those current citizens unable to spell "Judeo," capitalize Christianity, and omit the hyphen between the two will be the first to be deported. |

that might have been you- it was definitely my immigrant parents who had medical degrees and got GCs at the airport! but it was not true for the vast majority of European peasantry that fled to the United States, all this Italians, germans etc were subsistence farmers, some of them were lucky enough to be stone masons/car[enters etc but even those ended up for the most part just doing manual labor unless they were very very lucky. the US had an explicit policy of restricting citizenship and immigration to "white" populations- those from europe and the levant and they though they were being VERY generous in including Irish, Italians, subjects of the ottoman empire in the category of white. this is why the majority of Americans are of germanic heritage- its b/c that was the poor peasant population that was allowed in from colonial times form the very beginning while peasants from other countries were prohibited and many of those peasants were illiterate. |

esol and other immigration services were provided for the masses of European poor flooding ellis island and the urban centers of Chicago, san Fransisco, Philadelphia, Boston, NYC, Baltimore all had public school lessons in polish, Italian. Lithuanian, Romanian and yiddish plus many other languages . germans had German language school in New York, Wisconsin, Texas hill country until ww1. god people here blathering on are SO ignorant of the history and culture if the united states, some of y'all need to go read the little house books again. they are positively left wing compared to some of the idiots posting here. The very first scene of little women is about the family giving their Christmas dinner to immigrants and is predicated on an ladies aid society that helps poor immigrants. the pioneers in little town on the prairie look food to charitable giving from people back east and the government giving handouts to support the homesteaders (aside from the homesteads as government handouts ). the very colonial settlers who came here were "sponsered' and given assistance to settle this place by the investors in the colony. so I don't know what terrible luck your literate, immigrant ancestors had that they didn't receive any of the things literally every other migrant to the 13 colonies and emigre to the western states got but my congratulations that your female ancestors were good on their backs & knees and you survived b/c everyone else survived on social programs. |
