What is going to happen to the RTO?

Technology has defeated those jobs.

Eh. Everyone I know with professional jobs in the private sector can do their job at home a day or two a week. If being able to use a computer and email in your home office is the line then no job should be safe.

Those jobs will be replaced. Really it will return to physical labor jobs being the only secure ones, talking more complicated physical labor jobs, not robotic factory assembly line ones that robots can do.

It's so weird that you cling to a narrative that is both false and grim. A happy fantasy I would understand, but trying to push an idea that is bad for everyone and also demonstrably untrue is really odd.
I would love to know what you did for a living before you retired.

You're delusional. If AI can replace nurses, doctors, and lawyers, what makes you think your precious white collar job won't fall victim to AI? Even IT professionals are losing jobs to AI.

AI cannot replace nurses, doctors, and lawyers.

DP but sure it can, and already is in the stages of doing so.

Of those, nurses would be the least likely to be replaced, as they are doing physical labor that cannot be done by a computer, or even robotics at this point in time.

Doctors can easily be replaced by machines/booths that a patient is hooked up to, scanned, and a full physical exam performed on in just minutes, much better than a whole team of doctors could do in weeks. Virtual diagnosing is already common among the profession, and just the start of that trend.

Lawyer are the MOST susceptible to being replaced by AI of the ones you list, as AI can peruse millions of court cases in microseconds and counter argue a point, bring up an objection, and cite previous law in seconds. Something not even hundreds of human lawyers working for months on a case could do.

It is amazing how people don't realize all this. Mostly it is just fear and depression of uncertainty in their field of work.

Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. are not spending billions of dollars on AI tech just for kids to play with online, it will replace human workers in every area possible.

And this will be a good thing overall.

Just how people decried the use of tractors and machinery replacing slaves and workers, AI will replace humans in many fields of work.

I think this would be a good thing if normal people could reap the benefits with having easier and/or shortened workdays, but literally all the benefits will go to the large corporations. It’s not like the average American is suddenly going to have a good paying job with fewer hours. No, it will be fewer Americans with 40+ hour/week jobs to oversee the robots while the masses are unemployed and the birth rate continues to drop.

Not to mention it’s depressing to think about living on a world where we interact with robots for everything. While I wouldn’t mind a doctor who can use AI to research my medical conditions, I don’t want to be completely treated by a machine. I don’t even like the self checkout line at the grocery store. What a stupid world where we make ourselves functionally obsolete.

It's hard to say what direction it will take, perhaps multiple ones.

The cold hard facts though are that AI and robotics will revolutionize the workforce as much if not more than the mechanization of society when coal/gas came about and the Industrial Revolution prior to it.

I find it amusing how many on this site, and this very thread, seem to be in denial about the changes that are already happening.

AI is both bad as in poor quality and bad as in immoral. The only reason we'll see mass adoption is because so many fools willfully misunderstand how it does and doesn't work.

So yes it will likely change everything, but only because people are stupid, not because it's better or cheaper. It performs worse than humans, uses more energy, and cannot function without "free" stolen data that would be cost-prohibitive to pay for as required by law.

You think the rich will have AI doctors? No, that will be for the poors and they won't care how many die of obvious misdiagnosis by AI. The rich will get human service just like they get live people on the phone now, not the chat bots everyone hates.

You see, all you are doing is denying the reality of the situation and the future. That's fear that's causing you to do that.

Try embracing AI and robotics as a good progressive thing. Most non-manual labor jobs are really better off being transferred to emerging tech, and no more need for offices, commutes to those offices, etc.

I would embrace that, if it means regular people can still get an income and more free time. We’re currently operating in a society where everyone has to work for a living, and we have no plan for supporting the population when there are fewer jobs.

Well 71 oercent of women with kids under 5 are now working full time. I say we give a small payment for that population if they want to stay home with young kids. Problem solved.

A small payment? And what happens when their kids are >5? And would it just be for women?

People were not being honest with their hours. Where have you been?

Where is the proof that people weren’t being honest? If it’s such a widespread problem to the point the entire government has to be prevented from teleworking, there must be a ton of concrete evidence they can present to justify the policy. Why haven’t they?

Why are only govt employees called back 5 days a week? Why are private companies employees still hybrid 2-3 days in office or 100% remote. It’s not fair.

Many are back five days a week.

Many are not. Why are those companies able to operate just fine with hybrid schedules?

Because those companies have made a decision to trust their employees... and the employees do not abuse that trust.

Why are people so jealous of federal and Fannie Freddie employees?
Are the Twins Fannie and Freddie most profitable companies per employee as the employees abused the remote work?

I feel only the DC, Nova and MD area companies both govt and private have called back 5 days a week.
Many companies in south, mid west, west coast and north east have not called 5 days. Most people go to office is only 3 days and there is a hugh difference in quality of life if you are required to be in office 5 va 3 days a week. The new administration is disappointing people who are in and around DC.

No. DC was probably the last area to not be mostly remote. Really, this discussion is so old. If you can’t stand going in try to find a remote or hybrid job that is better.

And federal agencies can do the same thing. Thanks for clarifying. It’s proof Trump’s RTO policy is nothing but a pretext for hollowing out our government. Glad we agree.

And it’s working.

The Chief Executive of the Federal Government has decided on RTO. The fact that some companies have opted for hybrid schedules is irrelevant. If you want a hybrid schedule, then go work for one of those companies.

The Chief Executive is a demented moron with a horrible track record as a businessman who probably hasn't worked a full day in his pampered disgusting life. How much golfing is this jackass going to do while he destroys our economy and our democracy. He has no legit reason for the RTO other than to upset federal workers.

There was no real business or productivity-related reason for the RTO and you know it. Stop defending what is simply a ploy to piss off federal workers.

My office gave up a ton of leased space in 2022-2023. We are back 2 days a week in a hoteling set up (and mostly in conference rooms with a dozen people each). We have lost too many people performing critical and highly specialized functions and it takes several years to get through hiring, security clearance and getting people trained. And our teams are nationwide, so it’s a dozen people in the conference room, all in different Teams meetings. I’m DC based. My manager is Atlanta, and my Team of 12 is in 8 different locations. And these are jobs with broad bipartisan support that people notice, quickly, if they aren’t done.

We just found out that as of next week, certain job titles are going back to FT telework, both to free up space and to stop people from quitting. It’s happening quietly (I’m not posting the agency on here and drawing attention to it). But, it’s happening.

NYC has been everyone back for two years.

I actually went there on a business trip
fall 2021 and the happy hour we had at the W hotel was packed.

At that time DC was an absolute ghost town

My office ordered a bunch of standing desks for people. Aren't those like $100+ each? Good use of taxpayer dollars here.

I went from fully remote to fully in the office about a month and a half ago. Im fortunate that my office is nearby and the office conditions are fine. I don’t mind being in the office (most days) but it is not more productive. It’s likely less productive. There is a ton of time wasted just chatting with people, dealing with being in person, etc. The main inefficiency of being in person for me is that I’m much more likely to take leave if I have an appointment. In the past I was able to squeeze in appointments and then make the time up. Or take off for an hour or two. Now I just take a whole afternoon or even a whole day off. I have used a lot more leave (and for now I have leave to use). I am much less likely to work in the evenings than before. I never worked too long in the evenings but I still felt obligated to respond to emails etc.

My laptop stays at the office now. If I can’t telework, then I am not turning it on at home, so no reason to bring it.

I’m not defending RTO. I’m simply stating facts: NY, SF, and many other cities started seeing people called back 3-5 days by 2022. This was the case in the south and midwest long before it was the case in NY and SF too. DC has been a laggard. Why do you think the DC mayor wanted everyone to RTO? No other mayors were talking about that in 2024 because it had already happened in their cities. If you don’t like it you should get a different job. It’s a great benefit and if it’s meaningful to you try to find a job that offers remote or hybrid options, but endlessly complaining on DCUM is getting so old when millions of other people have been going in every day since 2022. It’s just no longer mind blowing that some people have to do this.

Much closer to 2-3 days per week than 5 that's for sure.

Not PP but they were responding to the ridiculous claim that the DMV is the only place with full 5 days a week in person. Which is a blatant lie- NY has been back 5 days a week for a while. DC was the last place to do it.

5 days is unusual unless you work somewhere like Goldman Sachs and then you’re well compensated for it. Plenty of private sector workers in well paid jobs are working from home 2-3 days a week.

NY is not “5 days.” I have friends in big law there and it’s more like 3 days, with no questions asked if you need more for a sick kid etc.

When I met with our HR staff, she had the standing desk, AND two monitors sitting on top which blocked her whole head. She talk through the little sliver of space between the monitors. Ridiculous that the HR person don’t know some office etiquette.
