Both unfortunately seem to have a lot of mental health issues, both prior to and after the transition, but on a positive note, they seem much happier now (I think).

The mental health issues are a common thread for sure. There is a student at my daughter’s high school who changes their name and pronouns regularly (at least once per month) and gets very upset if classmates call them the previous month’s name/pronoun. I’m all for acceptance but pick something and stick with it, or at least understand why people can’t keep up.

people really do not want to talk about the mental health/developmental/trauma aspect of this. there are many accounts from detransitioners that make clear that they had serious mental health or trauma issues that presented as a focus on gender as a solution. On the flip side, the advocates present transitioning as a *treatment* for mental health issues - which is not at all conclusively supported by any data. those of us with kids with mental health issues sure wish that the issues could be resolved by just changing our child’s identity. While LGBT kids are more at risk of mental health issues especially with unsupportive parents, it does not follow that all mental health conditions are cured or even improved by transition.

It is also fairly well established that kids with autism are disproportionately included as trans. I have a spectrumy kid and the truth is that these kids see everything differently because they tend not to accept or understand the social norms imposed externally. It’s very natural with the way their brains work that they think literally about gender and decide “well since I don’t FEEL or look female the way I guess I am supposed to, and I like short hair, I must be male.” So it’s absolutely incumbent on grownups (especially mental health professionals!) to spend a long time teaching these kids that you can be a girl who doesn’t feel “girly” or a boy who’s not totally masculine.

PP here and I agree. I admit I have a hard time understanding why an anatomical girl can’t just be a lesbian “tomboy.” Why does she need to actually surgically become a man?

You’re confusing identity and sexuality

You used the example of a ftm person. This person identifies as male. That doesn’t mean they are a cis male. They might be gay or bisexual.

Just wear what you want to wear and date who you want to date. Physically changing your body through hormones or major surgery is something else entirely. And yes, I feel the same about cosmetic surgery too.

Great. You make that decision for yourself and your children until they have the legal right to make their own choice. This is none of your business- what other people do- and it’s a very small number. This is a culture war instigated by the GOP to distract you from their dismantling the constitution, looting the country, meddling in European elections, and antagonizing our allies.

No, this is a culture war started by the democrats and the billionaires who fund them, telling our children the solution to their natural anxiety around adolescence is that they are actually transgender, removing all safeguards as unnecessary gatekeeping, allowing only affirmative therapy, creating lifelong medical patients to support big Pharma, and allowing men into women’s sports, locker rooms, dorm rooms, sorority houses, and jail cells.

And then when women naturally object, they wave their hands and claim the GOP started it, like a toddler unwilling to take responsibility for their actions. So no, this wasn’t instigated by the GOP. This was started by the left and the normies are over it. This is how we got Trump. Take some responsibility for your actions.

WTAF?

No. You are the problem here. You are misinformed and spreading RWNJ propaganda.

STFU.

Where were these billionaires during the election? How about the inauguration? The billionaire class overwhelmingly supports Trump, Vance, Thiel, Musk and their authoritarian agenda. Right now, the richest man in the world, himself an illegal immigrant, has locked YOUR lawfully elected congresspeople and Senators out of a federal building.

I live in one of the most progressive cities in the nation. My youngest has trans and nonbinary kids in his class. There is no agenda. There is no pressure. The kids are not being given any instruction about sexuality or gender. There is just tolerance. Your fear has been instilled by people who want to steal your freedom and your money.

The girl was mom's favorite, but mom is in a bad marriage, allowed dad to run amok and do as he pleased while mom slaved away endlessly to keep the home and family together.

The daughter ended up developing significant mental health issues, and at some point got medical clearance to transition.

I have no doubt that significant mental illness combined with that kind of family background, could be a contributing factor to a girl not wanting to become a woman.

I feel bad from mom, she blames the democrats.

I mean….. she’s not entirely wrong here.

+1

I guess it’s natural to want to blame some external boogeyman when your kid ends up disappointing you rather than accept that you and or DH passed on some aytipical genetic code and were a horrible roll models to boot.

The social contagion I see is adults not understanding the next generation and how they present themselves. Their fear comes through as transphobia. It’s a fad, kind of like how parents in the 1990s had satanic panic to fill their time. Eventually most of them will outgrow it and realize that being different isn’t a reason to hate or pass laws about what medical treatments for others. Some people need a boogeyman and insist on punching down (children are such an easy target).

If all it was was how kids present themselves, nobody would be here. The issue is medical intervention, which was growing at an extremely rapid pace since 2018.

It’s still a very small group of children. Transphobia, specifically trying to limit trans rights/access to healthcare certainly didn’t start in 2018.

I wish people were as determined to eradicate preventable diseases (especially those with vaccines like measles) as they are to make trans people go away. I’d much rather see a trans outbreak than a measles outbreak. One of those things is really harmful to kids.
