It’s unfortunate if the decision is purely based on the final US News ranking, but I have seen some status hungry parents go this route. And it doesn’t stop at college. The decision on grad school vs FAANG job, the brand of their kid’s first car are all driven by the same perspective. Life outcomes have also reflected this.

Parents who do that aren’t following USNWR’s own advice. It’s meant to be a starting point or an input into creating a list. For that, it is helpful. I think it’s weird to lament that it weights 10% on how the 1/3 most financially strained perform, or to declare the deans and presidents contributing to the survey should be ignored, but it was never meant to be the end all. Ultimately college is about fit, and the guide books are there to help families start their research and list formation, not replace it.

You send your kid to Sidwell only to see him/her end up at a State School….OMG

What social meltdown.

This is the type of parent who has a meltdown when schools like Wake Forest or Tulane slip in the rankings. While both are perfectly fine institutions, they often serve as landing spots for wealthy but otherwise average students. So, where do you turn when your "Ivy backup" now ranks lower than Rutgers? I suppose you choose a because a pricey college the size of a small high school at least sounds exclusive.

Based on these posts, it seems they turn to DCUM to rage about it and try to convince everyone that their school is *actually* really elite.

I think that LACs should be added to
US News national rankings, but I would just do so in bulk since it takes something like 20 of them to equal the undergraduate population of one state school. For example, I would just consider the NESCAC schools one school for the purposes of rankings.

They are added to other rankings. WSJ and Forbes rank all schools together.

Forbes is probably the closest to USNews in their criteria while WSJ produces some wild results. CMC is top 5 while Williams is like 300.

Do not use any rankings. Look at the actual schools.

You wouldn't know hyperbole if it hit you in the face.

Applicants to Tulane know the deal.

Look at Tulane's ED acceptance rate ( close to 70%). Look up the EA rejections and immediate emails to switch to ED2.
