If your kid needs a tutor to do well for SOLs, then your kid isn’t academically advanced. Pushing kids beyond their natural abilities and interests just because you want them to go to a certain school is gaming the system. |
No. The PSAT adds extra layers of complexity creating barriers for lower-income kids. Which is probably why you keep pushing it. Gotta hoard those opportunities, amirite? |
When you have to be intellectually dishonest to you make your point you might not have a point to make. Prep companies had caches of former test questions. They were constantly trying to "crack the test". They asked students to share details/questions about the tests and then shared that info with other students. It was appalling that we effectively had a pay-to-play admission process for a public high school program. |
Studying is not pushing a kid beyond their "natural ability" If you're not pushing your kid to study harder then don't complain when kids that do study harder get further. Hard work just provides a huge advantage over relying on "natural ability" |
We can give every 8th grader the PSAT. Many states do. |
The claim was that the were getting test questions before the test not that they were details about prior test questions. You can get details about prior test questions on amazon for $20. The fact that people like you think studying is cheating is probably explains much of the achievement gap. If you have to lie to make your point, you probably don't have much of a point to make. |
Did you know when you choose a side salad with your entree instead of a burger you have discriminated against the burger? Most discrimination is perfectly fine. |
The United States as national origin isn’t. Don’t be daft. |
The statement was "national origin" is not a protected class not that the United States is not a national origin. And yes the United States is a national origin just like white is a race. |
I never called it cheating. Prep companies had caches of former test questions. They were constantly trying to "crack the test". They asked students to share details/questions about the tests and then shared that info with other students. This gave students from affluent families an unfair advantage. The community was appalled that we effectively had a pay-to-play admission process for a public high school program. |
Yet another test? No. If SOLs don’t work then skip it. Stick to the current process. |
You are welcome to sign your kids up for a ton of expensive enrichment if they need the extra help. But if you were doing it with the goal of admission to TJ then you were gaming the system. It was well known in affluent circles how to give your kid the best chance of getting in - test prep centers. It was pay-to-play. |
I agree and I'm fine with kids taking enrichment and studying. I feel the county's resolution to pick the top students from each school was a great solution since it addressed this very problem and insured that all residents have a fair shot at programs like TJ not just students from a few wealthy schools. |
Yes but when you choose to only serve hamburgers to people based on where they or their ancestors were born, that is illegal. With that said, you are allowed to discriminate based on linguistic ability. I don't have to hire you if you don't speak english. But I cannot require that your ancestors come from england. I can decide to ONLY hire someone that speaks spanish. But I cannot require that you come from the same country as me. |
What do you mean "crack the test"? All of the same information is available on amazon for $20. Affluence gives you an advantage in accumulating human capital and that's life. Unless you want to raise all kids in a creche, different families will invest different amounts in their kids education. That is cultural. That is why you see more asians excel academically at every income level relative to their non-asian peers. They just work harder. You can too. |
