Va resident who’s DS was accepted to UMD CS and rejected at UVA CS ED.

UMD ranked 18th in CS. UVA ranked 33rd in CS. Go figure.

Hopefully your kid gets a little merit! Congratulations to them! CS is a hard direct admit.

He is really bummed since his out of state options didn't give enough to make it feasible for us. So UMBC or Towson it will be (he has taken classes in HS at the CC and hasn't been impressed so doesn't want to go that route.)

What about Hood or St Mary’s?

He wants a larger school. We have looked at both.

It’s a typo. Another email went out explaining this.

Is AI driving the admissions decisions at UMD? From the school communication, it looks like it is.

DC admitted to Freshman Connection also. Stats are cookie cutter comparable to the other students reporting the same result.

For other schools if you are accepted for Spring term, the data is not a part of the common data set.
The same way if you are wait listed it does not go in.

Yes, it is a way to gussy up their reported SAT/ACT averages.

State residents do deserve acceptance. There is no rhyme or reason to UMD acceptances.

UMD can't accept every single applicant from MD.

Also, as they say, "it's not the university of montgomery county", if that's where you're from.

UMD is hard to get into now, and they don't care about legacy.

Not from moco, but thanks for assuming.

Same here for 2023 cycle. Except ours was rejected UVA EA, not ED. We are VA residents.

Says who?

The rest of America. They know California is nice, and Oregon has hippies, and Washington State has tech, and New York State has many schools, and many of them like Ohio and Florida.

But Maryland? I'm not even convinced most of the country can find it on a map.

It’s true. I’ve met people who don’t even know what region Maryland is in.

I'm originally from CA. I would say for most people in CA, if they can't get into T15 oos, then they will stay in state. I had never heard of UMD, or even UVA for that matter, or UIUC or GATech. So, it's not a knock on UMD (and my kid is there now and happy with it). It's just that California is like its own country when it comes to college. So many good schools to choose from; the vast majority don't know or care about these oos colleges.

I do think that has changed in the past several years, though. UMD is known in the tech industry now because of Brin (Google).

DP. I think this is a bit bizarre. All the schools you mention are very well known for CS and highly respected. You may not know them, but they will all have top notch instruction and hood networking opportunities. They all attract oos students. Where have you been? Too much beach?

I'm a lot older, so we are talking years ago. But, as I said, it has changed. Even so, most CA students still stay in state.

Of course they all attract oos. I'm just saying CA students have such a wide variety of great schools most don't care to look oos.

Virtually same thing with my FCPS kid last year. Deferred EA and then WL at UVA. Direct admit to CS, honors and merit at UMD. Giving our money to the school north of the Potomac. Go Terps!

First, congratulations to the students who worked so hard to get in and to those who didn't, it's all going to work out great! This is one snapshot in a very meaningful and happy life for a wonderful person.
As someone with some very close insight into this process, it can be hard not to rely on stats and numbers when comparing who is 'in' and who is 'out'. But Maryland simply doesn't choose using those alone. Top SATs help. Test optional is not a demerit. Rigor OF YOUR SCHOOL is critical. AP test scores are visible but NOT relevant. Race is irrelevant (YES TRUE). Essays, extra questions, letters of rec, activities that are ATYPICAL and GENUINE and not just fillers are vital.
They have 60,000 applicants. They are trying to fill an entire state flagship of many fields of study with students from as many different parts of the state and backgrounds, interests and experiences as possible. After that, about 1,800 are from out of state. Maximum.
A kid with NHS and band and 2 sports and some sort of volunteering isn't that much different from others. How to differentiate?
They cannot do this if everyone comes from an MCPS 'W' school. They cannot do this if everyone is a CS or STEM major. That is not the function of a state flagship. Arts and humanities are also considered vital in a well-educated and modern society. They are. Watch TV? Read books? Go to a counselor? Listen to music? There you go.
To the people who are minimizing how 'prestigious' or 'well-known' Maryland is to you or your friends: WHY? This is not a prestige race, despite the culture of this area. There are thousands of schools. People succeed at ALL of them. It's an academic institution. Most kids in this are are--brace yourselves--AVERAGE with lots of opportunities, well-educated, loving and slightly stressed out parents and the chance to really work hard in high school. I know firsthand and have seen it hundreds of times that these regular humans are IN DEMAND by employers of all kinds and NOT just STEM. For admissions officers, the entitlement and box-checking is wearying. They are thirsty for something beyond stacking typical accomplishments.
Every student can have a lovely life via or without UMD. STEM or biz or whatever. Just be the best you, and you have already won!

With some of the high schools (not W) that admit to UMD over others, perceived rigor, not actual rigor, is driving the decisions. I could get Excel to spit that out to me over 60k applicants in less than 5 minutes on my personal computer.

Also, wasn’t it 40k on another thread? Did 20k come in last night?

It’s ok. No one expects the in state flagship to prioritize state taxpayers. That would be unrealistic when the legislature keeps slashing/freezing your allocation. I understand.

I work near GWU and have also been on the campus of UMD and so prefer my undergrad college town. I just think “ meh” when I look at College Park an GWU campuses. So many nice, beautiful places other than College Park to go to school. It’s easy to get sucked up into this hype about UMD. Unfortunately, Maryland doesn’t have as good of a university system as Virginia.

But UMD is more diverse and some of us (even me, a Wasian, and my white husband) value that over schools full of white rich kids. Everyone has their thing. I'll take "meh" campus and diversity over lush grounds and little diversity.

My child got in UMD Letters and Science but not in CS directly for fall 2024. Is there a guaranteed admission to CS after a semester?

No. It will be extremely difficult. Look at another school or major

They’ll have an academic advisor that can walk them through the requirements needed to apply, like basic coursework. I know of several in the past years that have done so successfully.

PP- yes in the past, however now it will be different. Please let this family reach out to UMD and gather their information.

+1 I posted up thread. They halved the number of admits to CS, and raised the requirements for transfers into CS.

https://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/cs-lep-faq-effective-fall-2024

While we plan to increase the number of freshmen directly admitted to the Computer Science major by 150 slots (from 450 to 600 enrolled freshmen), the number of slots for new external transfers and internal transfers coming from a different UMD major will be reduced to 100 per year (down from 1,000)

https://lep.umd.edu/computerscience-after2024.html

Gateway requirements

- Completion of CMSC131 [Object-Oriented Programming I] OR CMSC133 [Object-Oriented Programming I Beyond Fundamentals] OR CMSC141 [Programming with Purpose I: Data-Centric Computing] with a minimum grade of B-
- Completion of CMSC132 [Object-Oriented Programming II] OR CMSC142 [Programming with Purpose II: Data Structures and Algorithms] with a minimum grade of B-
- Completion of MATH 140 [Calculus I] with a minimum grade of B-

They have indicated that students who are accept into the L&S but not direct to CS should have a backup major outside of CS. Data Science would be a good one. I know a couple of students who have transferred from CS to Data science because those CS classes are no joke.

Data science is not a major at college park. It is a specialization within the computer science major. So what are ur talking about when u are referring to data science?

Rigor OF YOUR SCHOOL is critical? Can you please clarify? I hope you mean it is critical that you took the most rigorous classes at your school, and not that it is essential you went to the very best school. Some of us just have to send our children to the local high school and aren’t able to provide the very most rigorous school.

Social data science is a major. Information science is another option.
