yes, you are talking my kid, he surprised me with a 154 WISC as we were going through the appeal process. since i know his ability now, i'll be putting him through more intensive course works, he's already doing 4th grade Singapore math challenges, but i'll be putting him through math competition courses and workbooks. As his parent i went through the same math competitions when i was young and enjoyed them. And went to a T20 university with applied math major. So no you don't have to worry about putting too much pressure on profoundly gifted kids since they enjoy these type of works, they will get mentally disturbed if they don't get challenged enough. |
I agree those students are underserved, but let’s not e Agatha y they are sacrificed. What you are proposing is completely not feasible. The top 0.1% by some metric will be a very heterogeneous class l, with different levels across reading, writing and math. I honestly doubly putting them together in the same class will be beneficial. Who will teach those kids and what curriculum, let alone selling this to the public, make it a non-starter. You’re better off trying to find some customized solution for your child’s, like enrichment, dual enrollment, AOPS, etc. plenty of parents find ways to keep their kids engaged in learning. |
I didn’t propose anything. I was replying to the person saying that it wouldn’t make sense to have them in an exclusive program. They are being sacrificed. The same way we accommodate mental impairments, we can also accommodate genius. The difference between a genius and an average person is even greater than that of an average person and a regularly mentally impaired one. So, suppose your iq is 100 and that of an impaired person is 50 (average iq of a person with DS). As a perfectly average person you will be equally apart from the 50 and the 150 iq. So next time you think anything about the unique abilities and accommodations and needs of a person on the left, think again about the unique abilities, needs and accommodations for the person with an iq of 150. You, having a superior iq to the person with iq 50 helps you understand his need. And you have a harder time understanding the needs of someone with iq of 150. Would you like it if we let the people with iq of 50 make decisions for you? Now, it is what it is, and the gifted population is in a tough spot, but don’t claim they’re not being sacrificed. |
yes they are being sacrificed, especially the average general ed teacher probably only see one or two in their entire 30-40 years of career and you think they'll know a profoundly gifted when they see one? no they don't, the profoundly gifted are not the same as the mildly gifted or the smart kids. they have special needs for a kind with an IQ of 150, only kids with IQ 130- 170 will get them, they need to be grouped properly to make friends not just playmates. it's not just the academic aspect, it's also the emotional and social aspect. |
Having a cutoff of 145+ doesn't make sense, since you would need to evaluate each domain separately. A kid could have a FSIQ of 145+ with only around a 130 in the VCI and FRI indices. This kid would most likely be served fine in the AAP classrooms that we have right now. Another kid could have a 135 IQ, but with a 155+ (ceiling score when my kid took it) in either VCI or FRI. That kid cannot have their needs met in AAP in their area of strength. There are many more than 15 kids per grade who have either a VCI or a FRI index of 145+. |
That’s how the Davidson Institute for the profoundly gifted selection works. 145+ FSIQ or two subcategories scores above 145. My kid has ceiling WMI and PSI, with other subcategories in the mid 140s. He just simply got too much free time in class where he’s not doing any learning. He hides a book in his desk to read when he already knows the material that the teacher is going through. |

Is just telling you that we do have the population that the AAP should serve but they are too busy serving the smart but not gifted kids. Virginia has a law for the school districts to come up with a gifted program to serve the gifted not the bright kids. |

Profoundly gifted kids are likely to become underachiever if their parents do not figure out their abilities early on and put them in the right environment for academic and social/emotional purposes. There are many unidentified profoundly gifted children suffering in the general Ed classes because their parents are not education focused, and their teachers can not identify them because they are just too different than the average smart kids. FCPS should put resources toward this population they are just as different as the kids that have learning disabilities. |

This is why our public school system fails, looking at the lowest common denominator to close the achievement gap so everyone fails… the successful public school systems in the country support their best students so the lower achievers can be pulled up by peer pressure and parental pressure… |
