What’s your summer sandal that goes with everything?

And PSA - if you want to be active through middle and old age, take good care of your feet now!

I agree. My main issue with this thread is all the people who seem to think that a sandal that offers ANY support in the form of a thicker sole, molded foot bed, or thicker straps is de facto "ugly". Like the only way to have a cute sandal is for it to have a really thin sole, or for the straps to be thin and non-existent, or for it to have a heel.

This attitude strikes me as very old fashion, and reminds me of certain attitudes on women appearances in the 90s and early 00s -- tight, restrictive clothing designed to show off your body, push up bras (the Victorias Secret era), high heels, hair had to be smooth and straight at all times, thongs and very minimal swimsuits and underwear gave rise to the expectation that women would remove basically all of their body hair, etc.

Modern fashion is less misogynist and actual factors in womens comfort and preferences, plus inclusive of disabilities, different body types, etc. Fashionable shoes now include supportive sneakers, sport sandals, Birkentsocks. Fashionable clothes can include items that are size inclusive and comfortable, not just tight, low-cut items designed to be alluring to straight men and only straight men.

A lot of the attitudes in this thread just feel retrograde to me. It's fine to have more restrictive standards for your own fashion, but to look at any pair of functional supportive sandals and deem them ugly (even super trendy ones like Birks) just feels backwards to me.

I tend to agree with you, but OP didn't ask for recommendations for functional supportive sandals that she could walk endlessly in, etc. She wanted a pair of flats that were versatile. She appears to value comfort (wants flats) but she wants to balance other concerns as well (she talked about getting compliments in the streets), and that's ok too. A lot of folks here have just plain missed the assignment. Personally, I think to most versatile sandal is some kind of slide, but I've posted "strappy" options as well. I like all of these. (I'm not sure if I saw you post a budget, OP, but if I really wanted one sandal to wear any and everywhere all summer, I'd personally be inclined to spend a bit more.)

Birkenstock Gizehs are my go-to; they’re classic and can be cute depending on the color. Very comfortable.

Birkenstock are never cute. These are less awful than the first one but they're still god awful. Yes they're comfortable but you're kidding yourself if you think they look remotely fashionable. Unless you're a teenager.

My husband would divorce me if I wore them .

I was a STEM major and lab worked in a lab and every single scientist wore birks with socks. I absolutely despised the look. I am an athlete but always liked make up and a more feminine look. I was sexually harassed/same sex at my first job by a woman that wore birks.

I can’t. I can’t get over them being the major dork shoe. And German women lived in them decades before they became a fashion statement here.

As a former bio major this is a lie. You can't wear open toed shoes in a lab!

Then post the ones you wear since you have such an opinion about everyone else’s sandals and their opinions!

The posters laughing at everyone else and coming across as judgmental b**ches have yet to post their own sandals

Newsflash: most sandals are ugly.

Blasphemy

I haven't seen anyone post Mephisto sandals.
Like Birks but more narrow.

Are these a little stylish? Maybe?

Do you really not understand the original ask from OP? Like, are you posting these as jokes at this point?

So i'm a poster who has been horrified by the number of orthopedic options posted on this thread, and i'm pretty shocked at how confused these posters seem by a really basic question.

That said, i actually agree that the vast majority of sandals ultimately end up making people look terrible. But to back up one step, i think some sandals are hideous (keens and all the similar ones posted here - those are objectively ugly shoes). And other sandals are adorable. There have been many cute, cute sandals posted on this thread (most of the non "hiking" sandals). But..... once you take those cute sandals, that are comprised solely of a couple thin straps and provide almost no coverage, and you put them on easily the ugliest least cute part of the body..... almost all sandals look like garbage on real people's feet. Feet look like they belong on yetis. Then you shove some straps between the toes, and yank the big toe one direct, and the heel starts sliding off the back (because most people's feet don't stay straight in shoes) and it's one giant mess. I have a freakishly narrow scope of sandals that i'll wear - generally they need to be a slide with decent coverage and very little toe cleavage. I don't have particularly ugly feet. I'm just surprised how normalized exposing our ugly feet has become.

Hey, PP, if you were between sizes, would you go up or down in these? It looks as if they only come in whole sizes.

+1

So much whining and so few recommendations. Only one decent recommendation so far.
