I mean good for them and all but we’re talking about McLean. I don’t think they’re hurting for resources in or out of school. |
NESCAC schools have a brand issue. Also, many kids don't want to be in small schools in the middle of nowhere where 30 to 40% of kids could be student athletes. I tried to convince my dc interested in STEM to apply, they did not because of above reasons. At a larger school they have a lot of research opportunities and being in a major city has also helped. |
Chilton did amazing this year. |
Que viva la dork! This is why I live in DC area and not NYC. Also my in-laws live in NYC. |
I get that the typical McLean kid will have resources, but it takes a lot of resourcefulness to seek out the opportunities yourself. They're not handed to you or so obvious for the taking. We moved our kids from private to public and can see the difference. Both have pros and cons. |
None of these kids go to remotely competitive privates, signed NYC private school parent. |
Dalton offers the most FA and has the most diverse population for an NYC TT school. These are the most desirable kids - a known quantity for diversity. Not a risk for Ivies at all. Add to that legacy and big donors and their matriculation is no surprise. |
Interestingly I’ve noticed that Harvard-Westlake in LA doesn’t have students who make an Instagram page like this (although it has VERY detailed College matriculation data). Not finding any on Marlborough in LA either. |
Urban poor kids have a lot of advantages compared to rural poor kids. Private day schools that offer significant FA, Prep for Prep, Posse, public transportation everywhere, city rec sports & music programs, and high-quality non-profits around to learn & practice various ECs |

So screw poor white kids? |
Employers and grad schools know NESCAC schools. Who cares if Joe and Jane Doe do not |
Most employers outside DC/Boston/NYC haven’t heard of the NESCAC schools |
What you’re saying is fit is most important. For example, many students who grew up in rural areas often want to go to school in a city whereas my kids who grew up in Manhattan wanted more rural. |
Just because you say so doesn’t make it true. National companies recruit in smaller schools too |
