I can honestly say this because I went to Tech as an undergrad and then got a stipend to go to JMU for grad school and transferred out after a year. Not a fan. I have a nephew who is a senior at JMU now and it is such a party school now, insanely so. He can't wait until graduation. He's done.

From this area, there are so many kids to ride home with and always a carpool seat available.

Kid at JMU who is not a partier. JMU is no different from any other college which has students who want to party. Some do and some don’t.

DS got into both last year and chose JMU with no hesitation. It felt like home to him and he's had a great year so far, academically and socially. I'd suggest you attend both admitted student days if you can.

DP. I have kids at both VT and JMU and they both love their respective schools. Either one is a great option.

I’m sorry for your kid- but remote and not near anywhere? That was not true when DH and I went there in the 90s and it’s even more built up now!

It may be four hours from NoVa, but so are many other schools. Blacksburg is a cute little town, nearby is larger Christiansburg, less than an hour away is Roanoke, and the surrounding New River Valley is gorgeous.

I also went there in the ‘90’s. Tech is a great school and a fun place to be a student, but Blacksburg is far. It’s not close to any big job centers for internships and the like.

And yet, all the big companies/agencies come to Blacksburg to recruit. Internships usually take place in the summer.

If your child really wants to attend VT, have them apply ED. You can't expect to be accepted just because you think the school is a match.

DP. They also have an incredibly competitive applicant pool from which to choose. Not sure why some parents choose to ignore that fact and just claim "yield protection" when their kid isn't admitted.

Agreed. Not bitter but it seems silly. State school should accept the top in state applicants and not guess whether or not they may go elsewhere.

UVA does this too, especially if you don't apply ED - as does W&M and many other schools. Weird how the complaining is always about VT doing this.

Couldn’t this be yield protection? And wouldn’t they be right? You don’t actually want VT.

Exactly. We constantly hear that W&M heavily favors those who apply ED because they want kids who want them. Well, the same principle applies here.

It doesn’t. This is just something people tell themselves to alleviate bruised egos.

I don't think it's ego to assume that a VA kid with these stats should be accepted to VT. 4.0UW/4.5W/1570 and 13 APs

DP. Of course it is. As a PP said, your student obviously wasn't going to go to VT, and I'm sure that was obvious to them. They didn't apply ED, either. Why are they owed an acceptance?

ED solves this. High stats kids who *really* want to go to VT should apply ED. Those complaining about rejections did not.

This kid doesn’t want to go to VT . Kids / parents just want to feel proud oh my Larla got into 10/10 schools. VT has figured this out.

Precisely this. Why does no one complain when W&M does exactly the same thing? If you don't apply ED, you have a much lower chance of getting in. Why? Because they know you're not their first choice. Makes sense to me.

Does your son have any extracurriculars that are related to engineering?
A few years ago my nephew was also accepted at UVA and rejected by Tech engineering
The only reason as to why that we could think of is that he didn’t have any engineering/stem related activities.
