Honestly, the only place I've heard about hotel tipping is in movies (hardly a window into reality), and here on DCUM (which is....a unique place, to say the least).

You need to leave $5-10 a night at hotels, this is what decent people do now. Maybe not when we were kids, but now, yes.

As an aside: a few people who used to work as hotel cleaning staff told me that on the day of check out the manager would quickly go into the room and grab the tip… so now I don’t tip on the last day unless I see the cleaner in the hallway and ask if my room is on their list and they confirm

Mental gymnastics to avoid tipping your cleaner, "I didn't see them in the hall when I left and I heard once managers might steal the tip so I won't do it". Cheap.

Obviously I can’t prevent you from tipping the manager…

Great. That must mean you support a living wage.

A high school student working as a hostess in a local restaurant or coffee shop or sandwich shop doesn’t need a living wage.

I can’t remember the last time I had a high schooler serve me. They all seem to be off doing travel sports or brushing up their Mandarin.

Then you must live in a very rarefied area of the world.

OP, this outrageous and you handled yourself well. I also don’t believe in tipping for take outs. This new tipping culture is a bit too much.

I worked as a hostess all through high school and took to-go orders and then boxed them up. I was rarely tipped: maybe one out of every 100 orders. I was paid $10/hour and the servers were paid $3/hour plus tips.

Last summer my 15 year old daughter worked the take-out counter at a taco place and made $9/hour. With tips she made between $16-25/hour, it was a bit nuts for a 15 year old.

Not really. Like 30 years ago you made $10/hour; your kid should be making more than you, not less or the same. What is wrong with you?

Not PP, but how many kids were making $10 an hour 30 years ago? That’s about how much I made in my first post-college job (a job requiring a bachelor’s degree) 27 years ago.

I mean, yeah? UMC and even MC kids don’t seem to have jobs anymore. They’re busy bulking up their resumes for college applications.

I know what you mean by the new tipping culture with the option on a screen at every place that sells food but tipping on take out orders has been normal for many years. When I worked in a popular full service restaurant about 20 years ago there were typically two staff handling to go orders, taking the order on the phone, completely packaging it and making sure all food items and condiments, etc were there and then taking it to the person's car or to the person waiting by the door. They were paid the same as servers, they worked for tips, and they worked hard.

I find it a little amazing that so many of you think it's up to you to decide what is right or wrong in these scenarios. You know what is right, you just don't want to do it. You should not be patronizing restaurants where employees work for tips.

Yes, I'll be glad to help you understand how it works since you obviously have no real clue. You're welcome!

It's harder for me to tips at hotels because I don't carry cash anymore.

I heard on capital hill, politicians tip restaurant waiters $100 for a quick lunch. Is it true? They are setting on high bar for the rest of us with tax payer money. A normal person just can’t live up like that.

Why don't they need a living wage? They need to get paid fairly regardless of whether they are high school students or not?

No. —from a bar/restaurant family

I’m normally pretty generous with tips, but the hostess was wrong. I have worked as a waitress, a hostess and an “expediter” whose job was to prep and package takeout orders.

Granted it’s been a while, but when I was a hostess or expediter I was paid full minimum wage. When I was a waitress, I was paid the lower tipped employee wage. If she was not indeed the hostess, but a waitress standing at the host stand, that is her issue with her employer - not yours.

Anonymous wrote:I recently went to Enchant. I stood in line for a while to order hot chocolate for my kids. Overpriced hot chocolate at that (like $8 for what was clearly just a packet of Swiss Miss). There were also boozy drinks served in the line, so a lot of customers were likely tipsy and cold and not paying attention. The guy serving drinks was very chatty and friendly, seemed to have a system going to keep the line moving. I get up to the front and he’s telling me how cute my kids are, he has kids the same ages, etc. Asking if they had fun.

He takes my card and swipes it, turns the screen toward me quickly and goes “just hit okay right there.” I had a long line of people behind me and two kids bouncing around waiting for their (again, already incredibly overpriced hot chocolate). So I hit okay without really looking. Right as I hit the button I realize there are tip box options and it was pre-set to 25%! I mean really? Who in their right mind would tip 25% for hot cocoa poured out of a giant jug? I didn’t feel like making a fuss so I just took the drinks and moved along.

But it turned me off of ever going back there. It was so crowded, the food options were awful and overpriced. My family spent so much money and this felt like a sly money grab. I bet the people ordering the $24 light up drinks didn’t even notice the automatic tip, so I bet it was a cash cow.

Tipping culture is getting insane.

Wow. That's some pretty upfront theft. Write a review to warn other customers to look at the pre-set tip before hitting submit.
