The United States Secret Service is a rogue agency

Only criminals like Trump family and 1/6 terrorists wouldn't want more cameras around.

Wow. I knew it was invasive, but not this invasive. Is anyone in congress (either party) interested in fixing these abuses??

Is anyone paying attention while our civil liberties are being dismantled?

Lots of liberals have been talking about it since W really accelerated it. We have been called a host of names.

oh yes, I recall Rs (myself included back in the 90s/early 2000s) saying to liberals that you have nothing to be afraid of if you are not a criminal regarding the Patriot Act.

You won't find any conservative news outlets back then complaining about the erosion of civil liberties.

Yes, I left the R party a while ago, and I don't mind having cctv. I think it keeps us safe. It could've been used to get the woman in the video who was seen trying to plant something near the Capitol during 1/6.

Cops use security cameras all the time to find criminals. I don't see using ring cameras or cctv to be all that different, just more of them. Shrug.. don't break laws, you have nothing to worry about.

I also think it's fantastic that it was the security video at MAL that caused the FBI to get the warrant.

Again, wrt the 1/6 bomber there is CCTV footage from US Capitol Police cameras on South Capitol Street, DNC cameras, RNC cameras and residential Ring cameras. We can assume there is additional footage from Library of Congress and other US Capitol Police cameras based on the detailed tracking information released by the FBI. There are cameras monitoring every thoroughfare and intersection around the Capitol. I’m not sure more surveillance is what is needed.

again, there was clearly not enough of them around if they can't identify her. She masked up before she got to the areas around the Capitol. If there had been cameras everywhere outside the Capitol, it would've been more difficult for her to mask up and get to the Capitol. Ring cameras are not *everywhere*, and there are a lot of blindspots.

You would be a terrible being in charge of security.

Forget about stupid USSS "lost" emails. That's child's play, seriously.

What the PP posted re. the DHS is very serious indeed. Why isn't the media all over this? The Watergate scandal was child's play compared to this. That was about factions in the government taking stupid actions against other factions in the government, but it was about corruption within the government.

The above affects all of us. ALL OF US. The DHS is requiring its agents to report on "suspicious" activities with QUOTAS. That means bogus reports to meet quotas, people. This is serious sh*t. This is the KGB and the STASI rolled into one intelligence agency controlling the population with repression. This affects you, me, your friends, your family. This is the stuff that leads to repressive governments.

and if we look at any civil rights movement in this country involving non whites, government agencies ie the FBI , have always been on the wrong side and were used as a tool to suppress, harass, and deny American citizens fighting for their civil rights.

Oh, so now Rs don't want to back the blue, and LEOs don't love Trump?

I'm pretty sure we can find many many posts between 2016 and 2020 where Trumpsters were adamant that LEOs just loved Trump, and during BLM (nonwhites), Trumpsters were all about #backtheblue, and we should use facial recognition software to arrest the looters.

But, now, LEOs are our enemies, and using facial recognition software is dangerous to the public.

So, on the one hand, Secret Service is good because they support Trump, and they deleted all the text messages that might hurt Trump; but, OTH, the FBI and DoJ are corrupt because they "raided" a former POTUS residence for taking classified material that was not his to take.

What PPs wrote about DH up thread is just deflection.

Stick to the topic at hand. There are those in the SS who have gone rogue and think they are above the law, just like Trump. They should be held accountable, just like Trump, or any DHS, DoJ, FBI, local cops who break the law. Period.

BTW, those ring cameras are great for catching crooks who break into cars and homes, and steal your Amazon packages. People post their ring camera videos all the time on nextdoor showing criminals attempting to breakin to cars. I guess if I was a criminal I wouldn't like ring cameras, either. Also, other democracies use CCTV, and it helps prevent crime, or at least, find criminals a lot easier.

Plenty of video footage of 1/6 bomber and yet here we are. How many perps are ever apprehended with Ring footage?

clearly there weren't enough clear footage of the 1/6 bomber, which is why she has yet to be caught. If we had cctv everywhere and every door had a ring camera, I bet they would've caught her by now.

So the answer is a camera every 10 feet? Have you ever lived in an urban environment. There were at least 3 cameras in that part of the alley alone, snd multiple cameras on the RNC. Have you ever lived in a city?

I think it's obvious that the USSS didn't bother to do a door to door to obtain camera footage. What little video we've seen has come through the FBI. There should be a whole lot more based on the location in DC. As I always say, a million-dollar reward would shake even the coconspirators loose. I wish the 1-6-21 Committee would demand an update on this investigation. Why did MTG ask for a pardon three days after she was sworn into office?

There were two cameras. Footage is only being shown from the obscured one.

A technology that can be defeated with a hat and $1 face mask?

because there aren't cctv everywhere.

So the answer is a camera every 10 feet? Have you ever lived in an urban environment. There were at least 3 cameras in that part of the alley alone, snd multiple cameras on the RNC. Have you ever lived in a city?

Yes, if there is cctv *everywhere* it would be a lot easier to catch criminals.

If there are so many cameras in the city, how did this terrorist manage to avoid the camera without her mask?

Cameras really do not do much good. London bombing had 6,000 hours of cctv. It was of little help. DC does not have the same number of cameras. You just do not get that good of a picture of the subject and you can only track forward/back till there is a gap in the coverage.

The four suspects were isolated on railway station footage within four days of the attacks.

Day three of the inquests saw previously unreleased CCTV of the men buying DIY supplies for the bombs.

Contrast to 1/6, over 18 months, and we still have zero clue.

The Secret Service isn’t leading the investigation. This is the responsibility of the FBI. And there were teams of agents going door to door over a period of several weeks canvassing residents and accessing video footage. What’s obvious to you doesn’t match with reality.

I was actually in London at the time. The cameras were of little use. They were able to track some of the suspects back to train stations but they Lost track of them after that. They identified the bodies and piece together their movements. They were looking for people who helped them or were part of the group. CCTV did not help. The Uk anti terrorist system was built to stop external threats not internal. The same problem we have here.

I’m not sure why anyone assumes that they don’t know who the 1/6 bomber is, nor why they assume that the footage we’ve all seen is all the footage they have of the stumpy person who set the bombs. I believe it’s another case of justice moving forward creakily.

You are probably right but leaving a bomber loose is endangering us all. I suppose they are hoping to nail her ultimate coconspirator. She was visiting the White House a lot in the few days before she was sworn in. It’s also pretty easy to see she’s kind of short in relation to alley fences and trash cans. I bet she was dumb enough to carry her cell phone. The person I’m thinking of always has one in her hand. Constantly Tweeting stupid things.
