Growing share of childless adults in U.S. don’t expect to ever have children

They're like PETA but for humans.

Most - really, most - of my friends do not seem that they will have them (I’m 36, divorced, with two elementary aged kids). We all have masters degrees but mostly don’t own houses, are crushed by student debt, and frankly this is a gd depressing time to be alive. I have two (7 and 4) and I worry, sincerely, about their future.

No one. I hate to break it to you but you'll end up stuck in your McMansion till both of you rot.

My neighbors are in their 70s and live alone in a 4100 SF house, 5 beds and 3.5 baths. They are miserable, hate all the kids in the neighborhood, and refuse to move. One day, someone will find them mummified in one of their zillion closets.

Why would you wish property values in your own neighborhood to be depressed? That’s dumb.

No, I wish they'd move to the Villages and let a young family with kids move in the neighborhood, instead of hording resources.

I have a cool idea. Maybe the government could provide tax expenditures based on the number of children you have?

All very talented, healthy and beautiful. My one daughter for example literally looks like Scarlet Johansson, award winning artist and is wrapping up college and already has a great job lined up in a FinTech. Between all the work from school, soccer, teaching then to drive, college, even how to sew, cook, shop, home repairs, religion classes etc. if she does not have kids what’s the point. And all three of my kids are that great. My house. My cars. My memories I even existed is worthless without a future generation.

Me, me, me. My, my, my. I, I, I. Your ego is way over inflated. You sound like a certified narcissist. Please seek treatment.

Yeah your life will have no meaning if your daughter doesn't have kids?? That's super unhealthy. Definitely seek help- maybe from your religion? Because I hate to tell you but I feel I must-- at some point everyone who has memories of you will die. And also- your DNA isn't that important. You need to find meaning in your life beyond your children.

Yes. I secretly hope my daughter doesn't have kids. I have no interest in parenting/childcare after she is grown and that is the kind of grandparent her own grandparents are so she will probably expect it.

LOL. If you wanted a legacy, you should have skipped having kids and poured your energies into something actually meaningful. Dolly Parton will be remembered.

Artificial intelligence is going to be the bane of humanity's existence. It will arrive soon. Any kid growing up now is going to live in a dystopian hellhole of misery, suffering, poverty, and death. Why would you seed a kid to bring them into a horrific world in the future just so you can stroke your ego?

The point is that the planet is overpopulated. Fewer people would help. Not sure why this is hard to grasp.

PP actually gave me some insight into the OTT parents around here. They aren't just living through their kids academics and travel soccer, they are looking to their children to give their enite existence meaning. Wow. Explains a lot. Poor kids!

But the USA is not overpopulated. Neither is North America. Not even close.

Wow. If enjoying Netflix is “sad”, this is…I don’t even have the words.

So what? We suck up resources from all over the world, pollute the air and waterways, and raze the forests for wood and grassland. There's only one earth.

What I don't get are the Millenials who declare they won't have actual children for the sake of the environment, but acquire carnivorous pets instead. Bonus stupid points if they spoil these animals with consumer goods like Halloween costumes and pay for their daily transportation to and from doggie day care.

Nothing, NOTHING, consumes more energy than creating more little American consumers, who will grow up to need not only dog costumes, but also SUVS, McMansions, IKEA cabinets, scores of iPads and cell phones, etc etc
