In 2022 Massachusetts raised taxes on millionaires by 4%, and conservatives said the rich would flee. Instead, the state saw a 39% increase in the number of millionaires. The state passed universal free breakfast and lunch for all public school children. It is now one of the least poverty-stricken states in the country. NYC mayoral candidate Mamdani proposed raising taxes on the rich by 2%. |
Yes! More of this. And the rubes who vote GOP need to stop sticking up for the ultra-wealthy. They manage just fine without your help and won't do anything for you if you try and help them anyhow. |
I note how you didn't provide a link for your stats. They are from a progressive think tank, Institute for Policy Studies. But, the stats are in question.... Paul Diego Craney, spokesman for MassFiscal, argued that the Institute for Policy Studies is trying to “spin the fact that incomes and net worth have increased across the country into a case for higher taxes.” “But the reality is simple: incomes rose everywhere between 2018 and 2022 due to broader national trends like inflation, federal stimulus, and a booming stock market,” Craney said in a statement Thursday. “Net worths soared because housing prices soared. A surge in real estate values doesn’t mean Massachusetts tax policy is working.” The Mass Opportunity Alliance also offered a sharp rebuke to the Institute for Policy Studies report. It pointed out how in January, U-Haul ranked Massachusetts as the state with the second-worst population growth for the second year in a row, while United Van Lines found that 53% of residents leaving the state earn $150,000 or more annually. Massachusetts gained 69,603 residents between 2023 and 2024, but 90,217 international migrants helped offset a “loss” of 27,480 domestic residents, according to Census estimates. https://www.bostonherald.com/2025/05/01/massachusetts-millionaires-tax-stirs-argument-on-whether-state-has-gained-or-lost-wealth/ "international migrants" = illegal aliens. |
Can’t even tell if they mean annual gross income or net worth, or went from 20 to 27 individuals. |
You need to sit down, $TFV, and pay your taxes, plebe. |
These are the kinds of retorts Obama supporters used to sling online but you're probably too young to remember. |
DP, so no ideas? |
So the MA policy was based on net worth and unrealized home values?! |
38% more from a low base is not a tough bogey. Where are the numbers and methodology and definitions here? |
You don’t need those things in TikTok videos to motivate millions of young disenchanted Americans. Do you want to be always-right-Tracy Flick or do you want to win elections? |
It's good that some of the Democrats are recognizing their issue. I was listening to Hakeem Jeffries the other day who was saying that rather than attacking Mamdani, Democrats need to pay attention to why he's popular. It's economic populism.
People are struggling. Some had a rough time during COVID, and some are having a rough time with Trump right now. Wages for most Americans have pretty much been stagnant while the rich keep getting richer. Housing costs keep rising, grocery costs keep rising, healthcare costs keep rising yet wages are stagnant and the middle class is getting beat down. All the other issues pale in comparison. As Carville once best said it, "it's the economy, stupid." |
Economic populism is the key to the Dems future |
True on the first part. And if that garbage wins elections pretty sure nothing will get done thereafter. Garbage in, garbage out. Wasted 2 or 4 years . |
None. Cuomo actually stole the free city buses idea from Mamdani after he realized the popularity. The problem with that is the MTA generates a 300 million dollar shortfall annually to commuters jumping the turnstile which happens once every few minutes in the city. The cops have to babysit folks doing this rather than stop crime and even when they do catch someone, they aren’t going on a chase of someone for it. Why don’t we have the doors they use in Paris for their metro? There are many things about New York that still seem so ancient |
