King Abdullah Academy Closing: FCPS Buy for HS?

Anonymous
Four adjacent schools, two have to be moved.

Lottery lets FCPS and the SB escape blame as well.

They could make a big drawing, like Lotto or the Hunger Games.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

I’m surprised you haven’t told us it’s all moot because KAA will be an aviation school. Maybe you’re saving that for tomorrow.

You think every poster who disagrees with you on any topic is the same person?

I think they are going to secretly tell THRU what they want to happen and then THRU will show up with a HS boundary proposal.

+1. Anyone who thinks there won't be all kinds of closed door negotiations wasn't paying attention last time there was a boundary adjustment.

Yep, mark my words, Kathy Smith will sneak Poplar Tree out of pp's lottery.

Do you all remember how last boundary drama, when the PTAs of the various schools were given veto power on who they deigned to let in? Buckle up.

There's no obvious choice to switch schools to refill Westfield so a random lottery among the nearby schools seems as equitable as any other solution. I prefer it to watching the politically connected finagle and screw over poor kids.

It would also be less than 1900 students, so it would probably pick up more than just the remainder of Bull Run and Cub Run from Centreville and Chantilly.

If they also add in Poplar Tree, that would get their school back up into reasonable numbers territory (@400 more kids) and reduce overcrowding at CHS.

Moving Oak Hill will deal with the overcrowding at Chantilly, thanks.

Well, they won't need to move Oak Hill if they are moving Poplar Tree out.

Floris and Oak Hill are the two schools pretty much guaranteed to move to KAA.

you can’t have floris without coates and mcnair. it would leave them as an island for westfield.

i think it’s floris coates mcnair and oak hill

Agree 100% you don’t create a Westfield island but there’s always the theoretical possibility you move Coates or McNair elsewhere (Coates to Herndon, McNair to South Lakes). However that leaves KAA super wealthy if is Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill, and Crossfield, with maybe a bit of Navy, so unlikely.

South Lakes refused McNair in 2008. The PTA didn't want them. That boundary study was based on nothing but socioeconomic issues.
They won't send Coates to Herndon --they might consider McNair, but I doubt it.

It will be:
Coates
McNair
Floris
Oak Hill
Crossfield--if they can squeeze it in.

How many students is that without Crossfield? Just curious.

I'm curious too.

Floris and either McNair or Coates (maybe Floris & Coates and move McNair to South Lakes?)
Fox Mill from South Lakes
Oak Hill and maaaaaybe Lees Corner
Crossfield and maaaaaaaybe Navy (does part of Navy go to Chantilly now or do they all go to Oakton?)

Someone who does not know the area. Or, has a specific agenda.

I live in the area, sweetheart. No agenda, just pure speculation, just like the rest of you!!!

Come up with a proposal that moves the fewest kids and doesn't make any existing school worse off.

(The only people who want to move are the families hoping to upgrade from Westfield to a nice new school or from the drive to Oakton to a nice new school.)

Maybe, just maybe, the people who want to move to KAA want to move there so they can go to a school near where they live.

Look at the map: those schools being considered for KAA are separated from Westfield by Dulles Airport, industrial facilties, and commercial facilities. They are not part of the Westfield community. They are not connected in any way to other Westfield students.

As for the numbers, it is 2 and a half schools that would be removed from Westfield. It is likely that the FARMS numbers at Westfield will improve as a result:
Coates: 50% FARMS
McNair: 30% FARMS
Floris: only 14%, but it is likely that much of that 14% is included in the Westfield boundary rather than the South Lakes boundary. Much of Floris goes to South Lakes. My guess is that of the Floris kids going to Westfield that the number is 20%.

Oakton mom here, Oakton is one of the best schools in the county but it's a long drive. We'd rather go to a closer school. The only agenda I have is my kid going to school with the same people they go to middle school with and being much closer to home for easier pickup after school.

All of McNair, and most of Coates. There is a section of Coates that goes to HHS.

McNair is double the size of an average FCPS ES, so they would be sending 150+ kids per grade to wherever they are zoned to go. Coates is almost as big, 120+ kids per grade but a small subset of the 120 is currently zoned to HHS.

I think they will send one of the two to South Lakes and the other one to KAA

They are right next to each other on the map, and Westfield needs more students. It does look closer than a lot of areas that would still be going to Westfield.

What am I missing?

Isn't Poplar Tree practically across the street from Rocky Run which feeds to Chantilly?

Yes. It's not moving. No need for it to move.

If they do this, it will be a 40% FARMS school. They won't do it. It will be Coates or McNair, not both.

How do you get that? Coates is 50. Mcnair is 30. The others are much lower. My guess 25
