demoralized in MCPS

New poster here. After working for 2 black principals, I will not do that anymore. They bullied white teachers, and were never approachable.

I've worked with 2 people from New Jersey. I will not do that anymore. They were both annoying.

Wait, what?

Maybe they detected your negativity and thinly veiled racism and responded accordingly.

Not np but I do not think you can dismiss the racism on the principals part without all the facts. Black people can be racist too.

Well then ALL black principals must be that way, right?

My MS child had a shelter in place followed by a lockdown last week, because of threat to self harm, followed by a 7th grader making a joke about a gun that wasn't so funny.

BTW, my children have been in overcrowded schools since kindergarten, and will remain so through high school.

This is not normal, and not condusive to learning!,

This!

My oldest is in 5th grade and we have a kid who has a major outburst at least once a month. Runs out of the classroom. Yells at the teacher. Cursed at the teacher. Has thrown a trash can. Has hit another student in front of a teacher. Has thrown a chair. It’s out of control.

Parents are never notified. We hear about it from the kids (multiple kids, and the teachers have corroborated these stories). It is an awful learning environment.

Maybe the PP is living in some utopian neighborhood in MCPS that doesn’t face these challenges. But for the rest of us, this has been reality for our kids. We are at a Focus school, but I have even heard these types of stories from parents in wealthier clusters.

Once the student was hit, thee parents should have come out in force. See all the tips in this thread. Don’t stand for this!

Doesn't MCPS have a responsibility to notify parents if employees know a child was hit by another child? Imagine how demoralized the students at this school feel when staff are neglecting to protect their rights to a safe educational environment. Imagine how it affects their ability to learn.

My child reported bullying at his high school. It was so bad, he didn't want to go to school anymore. It was so bad my child was assaulted by 4 students in the stairwell at school.

MCPS said to fill out the Bullying, Harassment, and Intimidation Form, which we did. The principal wanted him to name names, which my child did. We had written proof of the cyber bullying, there were witnesses for the face to face bullying, and probably even video evidence in the principal's possession.

What did the principal did the principal do? Exactly what my child said she would do. Nothing, because she doesn't care about students. She is more interested in data points and she said bullying was not occurring.

If you've been slapped around by two of your children, it's safe to say that you won't be spending much time with them. And yes, you may generalize and keep your distance from child number 3.

3 of the best Principals I have known in 18 years in MCPS have been Black. 1 was a male. They have been in extremely diverse schools, some with special programs, and all of them were exceptional. At least two of them were targeted by MCPS Central Office and very corrupt administrators who were their bosses. All three of them were replaced with useless White male principals.

What kind of life have you led that this is the analogy you come up with?

Wow, OP, are you at the ES where I teach? I am moving to a higher SES school with a good rep to avoid this.

This was an issue for my neighbors DD in MS. Terrible. Parents filled out forms and followed MCPS procedures. Nothing got done. Zero consequences.

Remember after the Damascus rapes, the Superintendent created an infomercial for students saying if you see something, say something? That was complete BS. The principal surely doesn’t want to know because reporting a problem creates a bad data point for the school. It's easier to blame the problem on the reporter than actually make a school and great place to learn.

Do you think Dr. Smith cares about school safety or what happens to students? Nope. There's no fidelity to implementing any of his new ideas. He is happy to say "I care about the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of students" like throwing around buzz words solves the problems. Meanwhile, no one is doing anything when students report problems.

Haha, maybe! There weren’t any openings in higher SES schools for my position next year. I’m still checking Careers this summer, though. -OP

So many problems would be fixed if the MCPS Employee Code of Conduct was actually followed. Currently it is a worthless document that is rarely enforced.

Same goes for the Student Code of Conduct. However, depending on the school and data points, students are more likely to be disciplined to the maximum penalty than staff.
