beg to differ on that one, sorry. Watch carefully on the 13th of every month...

What happens on the 13th of every month?

Kids attended elite DC private and attend Wilson for HS. One has had early acceptance, college offers and has been sent to college during high school hours where he's earning 8 credits before he even graduates. Are we in the white bubble? No, the foray into private was far more dangerous in terms of emotional health and well being. Too much money, cliques that don't die from Kindergarten, negligence of parents who allow drunken/drugged events to take place over and over, hiding details of illegal behavior by paying off officials and by private school heads who need the income, has put more kids in danger that I knew of first hand over several years at a private. The violence I read about at Wilson (and that my kids usually hear about from me) can happen when any child is commuting on public transportation in the city. I do think the Latin American community should be even more vocal about the gangs and share with a huge high school that affects all wards like Wilson does, and that DCPS leadership needs to listen and engage more of DC government resources of a problem that is not Wilson's but of our neighborhoods in every single ward.

I hear you, but I think the behavior at privates you saw as a potential threat to your kids whereas the very noticeable pathologies at Wilson your kid/and therefore you--sailed past. Wilson parents need to address their school's problems just as private school parents should.

Just another reason Wilson cannot accommodate more overcrowding. DCPS cannot safely accommodate the current student body. The future OOB set asides need to be repealed.

That may be. I also think the parents of the kids 'doing ok' need to get a lot more involved on behalf of the kids not 'doing ok'. I mean, are you all fine with actual stabbings?

I don't have kids at Wilson, but of the people I know who do, their kids are hearing about this through their parents who are hearing it here (except for the snowball fight, which the kids all describe as a ... snowball fight). This tread doesn't seem to reflect their everyday experience of school.

Where is the disconnect?

Honors or AP sections; stay alway from "regular" classes.

It makes sense to me that white kids in their Honors/AP classes (who only associate with minority students who are also in those classes) can feel very "safe" at Wilson on a daily basis, despite the presence of the loaded semi-automatic (which they knew was never directed at them), while some unfortunate kids of color who get on the wrong side of the wrong kid[s] for no reason could be scared shitless on a daily basis in the same high school, even scared enough to bring a gun in. If it doesn't affect you or concern you, in a high school as large as Wilson, it is easy to stay extremely "disconnected." There is no reason for Wilson parents to worry your kids, or repeat what is said here to them - they are pretty safe, for the most part, as long as they are in that white/Honors/AP bubble. Wilson is very segregated. And MS 13 is scary as all hell. I have been exposed to them through work, although not on the East Coast.

Our kids will never go to Wilson because we are Hispanic. We have known about the gang activity for a few years now - and perhaps we are the only people who need to know, since the city seems to want it kept quiet. That is why we made a serious effort to find out - initially we thought Wilson was an option, talking only to white parents. We will move before sending them there now. Can't afford private. Fortunately we have a few years to figure it out. But we know plenty of multi generation college educated parents who are sending their kids to Wilson, and if our kids were white, we would send them to Wilson without reservations.

No need for parents to scare their kids for no reason. Wilson is still the same school they went to before this thread. And it is their experience at Wilson that should matter to these parents. You just have to accept that not all kids in a large high school have the same experience, and that a lot of it sometimes depends on their race, SES, and neighborhood, which unfortunately may to a large degree determine whether they are inside or outside of that white/Honors/AP bubble. I have also heard that sometimes the barriers to enter that bubble are higher for kids of color. But that is another thing that white kids don't have to worry about either.

I have never heard any white Wilson parent mention gang activity of any sort - their kids are not affected and their kids may not even be aware of it - they are insulated, mostly protected, and yes, "disconnected." But in this case, that is a good thing for those kids. And it must mean that the gangs are staying within their own communities mostly. Both as victimizers and as victims...

gangs in DC also include neighborhood crews with neighborhood beefs. But the bad behavior at Wilson some parents seem oblivious to is teenagers not being directed by high expectations. It makes sense a kid on a college track would pretty much apply those expectations themselves. Kids who aren't have a little less external motivation unless the school and adults are encouraging them. Wish they were.
As to MS 13 PP they are very active in MD And VA so be careful what school district you pick. I have no idea if they are at Wilson.

This type of thing makes me want to do everything within my power to avoid sending my kids to Wilson.

Does Ms13 have sign ups in the gym or like do they post a sign up sheet on the bulletin board?

It shouldn't be too hard -- there are lots of high schools in town that are not as over-crowded as Wilson that would welcome your kids.
