LEMON ROAD AAP CENTER

So is Lemon Road ES a "low performing school?"

You mean which one has higher income families? I love the reliance here on FARMS rates whenever we start talking about how good schools are.

It's an unfortunate axiom but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that schools like Chesterbrook or Churchill Road or Great Falls ES or even bursting-at-the-seams Haycock offer a different academic experience than a Lemon Road, a Shrevewood or a Timber Lane. I'm not attacking lower SES families. Rather, I am implicitly putting the onus on FCPS to address the rampant inconsistencies in school curricula and the low expectations for academic achievement in high FARMS schools. Bad teachers aren't retrained or dismissed but sent to lower performing schools where their incompetence is a non-issue. Gotta love unions!

No union in Virginia. It is a right to work state. Teachers can belong to one of two associations, but it is very different and does not negotiate the contract with the school system. They have the same impact as the Advisory Committees.

Lemon Road now has a 21% farms rate.

This is due to the addition of the AAP center (which have very low FARMS rates). The number of FARMS students has stayed roughly the same.

Correct, the FARMS number of children remains about the same percentage as the other schools surrounding it in grades K-2, particularly Westgate, Freedom Hill, and Shrevewood. So therefore, the boundaries are working out well between all the schools in this area.

The Lemon Road attendance area is bordered by Westgate, Freedom Hills, Shrevewood, Haycock and Kent Gardens. There's a fairly wide range of FARMS percentages at those schools, although Lemon Road is about the ame of Freedom Hill.

Westgate 31.5%
Shrevewood 23.9%
Freedom Hill 20.6%
Lemon Road 19.2%
Haycock 3.1%
Kent Gardens 2.6%

Lemon Road's FARMS rate will increase as the kids who had to switch from Haycock to Lemon Road graduate.

I do wish more Mclean schools had a larger FARMS rate, but I think that is wishful thinking. 2.6%! And for an immersion school too.

Why? Is this based on an assumption that LLIV kids will stay at Westgate and Shrevewood in the future?

Lemon Road is also a considerably smaller school than the others. Those percentages reflect a higher concentration of FARMS in a school of roughly 350 kids....

Huh? Anyway, Lemon Road had almost 525 students last month.

Yes. Neither of those schools have LLIV for 5th and 6th grade so Lemon Road has two full AAP classes for those grades. But because those two schools started LLIV programs two years ago the same year Lemon Road center was created, Lemon Road has not been able to fill both classes for third grade. So essentially all schools in that area convert to LLIV programs with I guess Lemon Road having about 1 class or 1.5 classes of AAP students. It's quite ridiculous considering these same parents were willing to send their children to trailers at Haycock, but now we know a main reason a lot of them have stayed at their LLIV programs were because they were told they could be in classes of under 20 students.

What are avg. class sizes at Lemon Road?? Again, how strong is their AAP program compared to other the LLIVs (particularly Shreve and Westgate since those schools seem to be demographically alike...)

The first few pages discussed the AAP program there. Did you go to the prientation? I would think it is better than either of those schools mainly because there are more children in the program. Neither school has the large class sizes that you see in Mclean and Vienna so it's unlikely any school will have classes over 30 students or even over 25 students. If FCPS allows Shrevewood to have an all LLIV program under 20 students again, I will bring it to their attention publicly. I think they will fix this though so that Westgate and Shrevewood will continue to be mixed classrooms of LLIV, LLIII, LLII, and general ed children.

It looks from the board docs that Shrevewood and Lemon Road are "competing" for the LLIV students.
Both want to grow their program. Makes me wonder if their local screening committees will be inflating GBRS at both schools.
