| Pros/Cons of both center and school? |
|
LOVE IT there - small school. Specials teachers are amazing. (FYI - I came from one of the other base schools.)
My children are very happy. Close-knit group of people, no attitude. general appreciation for your help and efforts as a parents from the teachers. Some really cool afterschool offerings - neat classes, science olympiad, etc.... Could not be happier. Hope you come join us!!! |
| I have experienced all four grades in the center (two kids, two years) and think those teachers are amazing. Something needs to be said about teachers and staff that truly "get" your kids - and they do. They don't just care about academics (which they believe is important, don't get me wrong.) but they also believe that kids need to be kids. |
| The enrollment numbers seem to be declining suggesting that many are opting for their base LLIV. Have any of you who attend seen this? |
| I do not believe you can look at two years of a center and think that it is a trend... |
| What do you think of the projects that are given out? Are they well structured? We've noticed some AAP centers are extremely open ended with their projects. As an example, they give an assignment in very vague terms and then expect the kids to be very creative with their presentation. Our child enjoys being challenged but at 3rd grade still needs a bit of structure. Instead of being told to write a paper about a subject and just being given some books, we'd like our child to be given similar examples or a form to fill out as an outline before writing a paper on the subject. |
But isn't this 2 years our of 2 years in existence? |
Are you basing this on what you've heard about for next year? What I found online doesn't reflect declining enrollment numbers. Total enrollment: 2011-12: 249 (as of September 2011) 2012-13: 322 (as of September 2012) 2013-14: 482 (as of September 2013) 2014-15: 508 (as of September 2014) LLIV/AAP enrollment 2013-14: 122 (as of April 2014) 2014-15: 155 (as of April 2015) |

I was looking at the numbers from the feeders. Looks like only 5 students from Shrevewood enrolled in the 3rd grade center this year while 19 enrolled in the 6th grade center. Similarly, 8 from Westgate base in 3rd compared to 16 in 6th.
Very small numbers so the difference might not mean much at all. From what I see, there are only 26 center-eligible 3rd graders in Lemon Road. Just wondering what it felt like to those at the Lemon Road Center. May not be a problem at all. |
Does Freedom Hill or Stenwood also feed into this center or do they both feed into Westbriar now? They put too many AAP kids into Westbriar and not enough kids into Lemon Road when they made the switch. |
Westbriar. FYI, part of Westbriar likely will be moved to Colvin Run and also out of Kilmer/Marshall to Cooper/Langley. Between that and the addition, Westbriar should be OK to take more kids from Tysons. |
The reason it looks this way is because Shrevewood only recently started to offer local level IV. This school year I think it only has LLIV for the 3rd and 4th grades - and every successive year it adds a grade so that the 'graduating' 4th graders would have a LLIV for 5th grade at Shrevewood. I may be wrong and Shrevewood has LLIV up to 5th grade already, but I am certain that it does not offer LLIV for 6th grade. What this means is that all of Shrevewood's 6th grade AAP students would have to go to Lemon Road, or choose to not get AAP services. So the numbers reflect the available options and not Lemon Road quality. This is also likely true for Westgate because it only recently started offering LLIV as part of the county wide LLIV push. |
How many kids does Westbriar have in its AAP program? Colvin Run is already run over with AAP children and doesn't need anymore. Why does FCPS try to make these mega schools when there's another school down the road where these kids can go? |
The change, which some School Board members have discussed openly, would move both GenEd and AAP kids from a few Vienna neighborhood that are closer to Colvin Run than Westbriar to Colvin Run. Currently, these kids basically get bused past Colvin Run on their way to Westbriar, so I'm not sure why you'd think this change is a bad idea. |
+100 I totally agree. In fact, all of these schools have their own LLIV - Colvin Run shouldn't even be a center, period. |
