Kids can crash in any car. A BMW would hopefully have more safety features.

100%% we had a rental one on our last vacation and all we’re saying how much we liked our Honda pilot and Cr-v better. Felt safer. Less gadgets
It was a BMW that destroyed the family at Pyle a few years ago.

Parents giving high performance vehicles to inexperienced teenagers are profoundly reckless and I hope every single one of them are sued into oblivion for those accidents.

I absolutely agree if the parents were negligent they should be sued but it makes no sense to blame it on “a bmw.” Kids drive way too fast and kill themselves and others in all types of cars. (-a mom who drives an old Camry)

Have you really not noticed that 95% of these accidents involve a BMW?

Perhaps BMWs don't fare well in crashes.

The problem is that BMWs drive too fast too easily and drivers do not realize that they are out of control.

Are these self-driving cars?

Because otherwise, they are driven too fast by a driver. In this case a teen driver, in a car they had no business being in.

My teen drives my BMW SUV. But he’s not an idiot and and drive carefully. It’s the driver not the car to blame.

The SUV is a tank and not a race car.

Doesn’t stop them from trying to drive it like a race car though, does it?

No.

Look, I think it’s stupid to give teenagers a BMW and I see the pattern of these spoiled rich boys and fatal accidents, but if you’ve ever driven a BMW SUV, you will understand it actually handles like crap. It’s miserable to drive and is a deterrent. I really don’t like ours at all. My teenagers would never drive it simply because it’s SO difficult to maneuver and stopping it at even 40 mph is like stopping a truck.

Not being snarky-do you really believe that is accurate? (Spoiler: it’s not!)

Maybe it’s not true that 95% of accidents involve a BMW, but who among us has not noticed that people who drive fast & reckless seem to be more likely to be driving a BMW than any other brand?

It sucks. It’s a bummer. But it’s not “tragic.” This doesn’t meet any definition of tragedy

Correct. This is NOT a tragedy. This is an entirely expected and predictable outcome.

A tragedy would’ve involved them hurting or killing innocent people in the other vehicle. Fortunately it sounds like tragedy was narrowly avoided, and only the negligent participants suffered the consequences.

This wasn’t tragic - this was lucky.

It is still a tragedy for the other vehicle occupants. My mother was hit head on by a drunk driver going the wrong way on a highway. She was in the hospital for 6 months. For the remainder of her life, she had debilitating anxiety with highways, driving over about 45, driving at night, etc. There will be lifelong repercussions for the Lexus passengers, and that’s tragic as it sounds like they had no connection to the BMW occupants who made very poor choices.

The lack of empathy is mind-boggling. It is a tragic loss of young life, due to poor judgment that is all too common at that age. It is tragic regardless of whether there was culpability in the accident.

+1

These posts are just baffling. It is tragic all around. These posts are are just incomprehensible.

You don’t understand the meaning of the word “tragedy” or “tragic.”

It’s a lot of very bad things. But it isn’t a “tragedy.”

Thank you Mr. Sophocles.

It is tragic.

As a parent of preteens who knew kids who died in car crashes in high school including my best friend's bf, I am very sad for these kids and their families and friends.

It would have been a tragedy if the rich kids driving a high performance car at night had killed an innocent person. Thankfully it sounds like the people in the other vehicle were okay.

Just as there are many types of guns, with some of them being less-equipped for spree-killers, whereas AR15 type guns are more-equipped for mass-shooters. So it is also with cars. A BMW is much more equipped to be driven irresponsiblly than a minivan or economy car. I’d go so far as to say there’s no justification for ANYONE to own a high performance car such as these, just as there’s no justification for anyone to own an AR15 rather than a standard hunting type rifle that only shoots one bullet. Put simply, just as hunters don’t need AR15 guns, drivers don’t need the equivalent of race cars.

No it’s not. A newer bmw will have better safety features.

Does it have a speed governor?

No, you moron, it does not.
Can you name me a car that does?

You can set a governor on BMWs. The driver can unset them though. I don’t know that there’s a way to lock it.

You mean cruise control?

It’s called speed limit assist. Not quite sure how it works but was making me crazy in a rental recently.

That tells you something about your driving habits, no?

I hope the parent of the driver are charged. Incredibly negligent to give a teen a BMW, and to let them go out on a late Saturday night in the rain.

I can't believe that driver who killed the W&L senior only got two years. Arlington is a great place in some ways but letting off a$$hole rich kids is one of its greatest faults. YOu kill, you do significant time.

This is the answer. Until parents are charged for these crimes, whether their kids kill someone with a firearm or with a high performance sports car, nothing will ever change. The parents need to be held accountable for their terrible judgement.

That is a very normal sentence, not special to Arlington or to the age of the driver. Possibly even a bit harsh.

You don't want to ruin their life. There's a 34% chance he will reoffend and you can't do that from behind bars.

Well the McLean kid who was going 80 in a 35 and killed an Arlington senior only got house arrest. Benefits of lawyer parents. His mom is lawyer for Fort 100 company.

No. When you don’t know something , educate yourself.

It is called a governor or speed delimiter .

Of course NO car in America needs to go 80 or higher , but we care more about freedom than human life.

All of the graduated licensing elements are based upon scientific evidence.

This shows how they could be strengthened (ie, how many lives would be saved if they were).

https://www.iihs.org/topics/teenagers/gdl-calculator

Case in point: having kids with provisional licenses stop driving by 8 instead of midnight.
Remember —you can hold your kids to the rules that SHOULD be in place (such as delaying driving).

Europeans do not let 14 and 15 year olds drive—it is not safe. Most wait until 18. US Parents need to step up a little longer, to keep their kids alive.

Parents, it’s not that hard. Have a reasonable curfew. Actually know where your kids are and have restrictions on how far from home they can go. Know their friends and make rules accordingly. And give them sensible cars.
