And where the eff are the Democrats????

And where the Republicans?

This is the real question. How can anyone agree with how this is being done? The govt cannot be run like a business. People are not widgets.

FYI this isn’t reported at all on the Fox News website, so someone thinks this isn’t super popular

Does probationary mean those under disciplinary action or performance improvement plans in private sector?

No. It just means in your first year of employment (or second in some job types).

Federal employees in year one for competitive service typically have a one year period of probationary employment, while most federal attorneys have a two year probationary period called a trial period.

What is happening is awful, but it may help to be clear- the only employees that have been fired are either probationary or on a temporary term limited appointment that was ended early. Both of these categories have very limited employment protections.

I'm fairly certain that no employee past probation on a permanent career employment has been fired...yet.

No one placed on admin leave has been fired yet? Seems a lot of FBI agents have been summarily fired as well.

Even if they are only probationary, they still did a job that now will not be done and the ripple effect will seep into fed workers and in every town in the US. The job loss is traumatic but the loss of services, protections, people who you didn’t have to even worry about who were doing their jobs……. That’s government service.

Every town? You're being dramatic.

Is it better if I say most towns? You really don’t understand the scope of federal assistance.

You're not helping your case. Federal assistance should not be so prevalent that every single town in America will be affected by the loss of some minority percentage of federal workers. Moreover, it's not clear why firing, for example, a management analyst at OPM, would affect funding in a way that would be felt across the country.

I thought we had to fire everyone because we have SOOO much debt from all the government employees. But now firing them has no impact? Which is it?

Not just that people are not widgets the government is not a business.

If a private business fails to provide good service/quality it will fail as others will take its place. People can choose to remove their business and go elsewhere. There is no competition in the government (aside from contracts but these are managed by the govt!) so it’s not being run like a business. The only way to “choose another business” is I guess to vote congress out but now congress is being ignored anyway . It’s being run like any kakistocracy. With no checks and balances and no alternative we are screwed. It becomes a way of enriching those in power and securing their power at the cost of those without power. We had a lot of mechanisms in place to maintain checks on power but they have steadily eroded and now are being outright destroyed. The whole idea of a non political civil service was to prevent this.

My 40-year-old DH got layoff from the Dept. of VA as a doctor, and he joined the VA less than a year ago. He attended Yale pre-med, Johns Hopkins for medical school, and many years for his medical specialty. He spent three years volunteering for Doctors without Borders. He could have made a lot of money in the private sector, but he chose to work for the VA because he loved this country, and wanted to give back what it had given him as an immigrant from Vietnam. What the Trump administration is doing right now is nothing short of criminal.

This is reason for concern.

It’s not just the job loss! Federal programs and money! But okay. Cut this chump change to try and make America a better place so that rich people can get richer, put their money in private equity firms to try and make even more money, take over industries to make profit be the end all be all of goals. Sounds great, good luck.

Call your congressman and senators. This is a terrible story and would highlight the harm these people are unleashing.

My heart breaks for the college hires who just got laid off. Those young adults graduated high school in 2020 and spent most of college under pandemic restrictions.

I wasn’t expecting this. I was expecting a booming economy where everyone has jobs.

I’m so sorry. This is the real ugly part of these stupid lay offs. Your DH can find a “highly productive” job elsewhere but our country should have been highly grateful for his choice. Waits for VA care are horrible and this will make it worse for those who served our country too.

Tell your DH, “thank you” from us. Elon has no idea what he is doing.

With the Trump admin? No one was expecting a booming economy after reading Project25. We were expecting four years of his grudge tour.
