School district for conservative family (VA)

2) They are not looking for half of the board to be conservative. Just mainly the political diversity, so that the kid can fit in and family values are respected. We are in MoCo and I did not recommend our school district, as even I feel like too much is forced on the kids and religion does not get a lot of respect.

Curious why religion should be included or referenced at all?
What happened to separation of church and state?

He'd have to commute from Goochland County, but, honestly, I don't know any really good schools in conservative areas in Virginia. He'd have to move to a rural area, hence why the schools would be terrible.

Yea, the party supporting the pro - life platform is definitely not the one with the moral high ground.

There are tens of thousands of kids alive now because of the Dobbs decision and the following actions by pro-lifers.

And what kind of lives are they living? Many of them are living in poverty because you don't care about what happens to them once they're born.

Poor people in the US wear Air Jordans and are overweight. Pretty sure they will be ok.

That’s the Jesus spirit! F the poors.

Huh?

Military is hardly synonymous with “conservative.” Certainly not the brand of conservative OP is describing.

The military is a pretty woke place and radical political displays such as March for Life will be out-of-step with mainstream values of people living in a military community.

Oh look, it's "huh" lady. You know that makes you sound really stupid, right?

I work at the Pentagon. Most of the people I work with are fairly conservative (not MAGA conservative, but rather traditionally conservative). If OP wants true family values, I agree with these communities. If she wants MAGA, then she needs to move to McLean.

Huh? Lots of people use the phrase "huh?" when responding to something dumb. DP.

Except she wasn't responding to something dumb, she was just being dumb. Educated people don't write "HUH?" out in response to something. It makes them sound like an idiot.

It was a demonstrably dumb comment.

I have a lot of views I would guess are mainstream. I march downtown for precisely zero of them and think anyone who does is a radical

Those who are pro life firmly believe that abortion is murder. Do any of the current political policies that you oppose, but draw the line at marching for, result in over 600,000 deaths/year in the US alone? If not you can’t really relate and if so you kind of suck as a human being for not being willing to take more of a stand.

Except those who think that way are wrong and their opinions about this are not only completely invalid, they set the stage for oppressive policies. You have a right to demonstrate, but the rest of us WILL judge you for it. Harshly.

It would be especially bad if the kid in this scenario is a boy. No girl will ever want anything to do with him and he will be assumed to be a misogynist with few opportunities to demonstrate otherwise.

He’s a confirmed misogynist if he attends March for life.

Wow, this thread has gone off the rails, but case in point why the parents of the boy in question should think hard about where they send him.

they should look at catholic schools.

The Catholics I know are all pretty liberal. They're Catholic for the tradition of it, none of the Catholics I know are anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQIA+, etc.

Most Catholic schools teach a pro-life stance and expect at least high schoolers to attend March 4 Life. They close school for the day.

Thank you! I was wondering about Oakton HS. Sounds like it could be good fit (OP)

The kids should keep their forced-birth advocacy a secret from other kids. That’s going to create a lot of enemies, even at a catholic school.

Ditto for baby killer advocates.

What does “family values be respected” mean to them, exactly? In these parts, we respect that families look like many different things. If their view is anything other than that, I.e. if they think “family values” means a married man and woman of the same race with 2.4 kids and they are offended by anything else, including single parents, gay parents, divorced parents, mixed race couples, mixed race gay couples, kids raised by grandparents, kids raised by foster parents, kids living in homeless shelters … well, they probably won’t fit in anywhere in these parts.

No public school is going to “respect” their religion, whatever it is. There will be no deference to it. We don’t do that here in the United States of America.

Not sure what you mean by things “forced” on children. What are you talking about? Addition? Times tables? Instrumental music starting in 4th grade? Fingerprinting? What?

You aren’t making much sense.

This is OP. Family values like going to church or to march for life are important to their teen. They are looking for school where kids won’t think of him as a weirdo. Please don’t get worked up.

I have a teen at MCPS can tell you that someone like that would not fit in and would face a lot of hostility at our school.

Probably move to Florida and send kid wherever DeSantis sends his kids.

Sure, tell them to say that and see if they make any friends.

Are you one of those right wing nut jobs who think “why oh why won’t you tolerate our intolerance” is some sort of witty and clever retort?

I teach at one of the LB/Robinson/Woodson schools (they’re all similar makeup). Many of my students are from religious families (all religions—Christian, catholic, Muslim, Jewish) and talk about going to services. Most still consider themselves quite liberal though. I know of none who have taken off for the right to life March. You’d need catholic school for that.

We do have “young conservative club” and “Christian club” and such, but they are far smaller in numbers than other groups.

Will he find a handful of people who share his views? Sure. Is he going to have a large friend group if that’s his criteria? No. When my senior students were evaluating college options last spring many, many of them brought up abortion access as a fear of going to southern schools when they were telling me what they were choosing between. If he speaks proudly about restricting it, he’s going to alienate a lot of the young ladies on campus.

He won’t be shunned for going to church though, and if he can learn to keep his politics private then he’ll be fine. If he wants to talk to others about his March for life experiences and find support, he needs to go to a religious school.

No reason the schools would be terrible. There might be fewer students capable of advanced work, but the offerings might be better than the NOVA districts which have been pushing equity. 7th grade algebra or 6th grade will be easier to get in rural areas pretty soon.
